Masters of Horror Episode directed by John Landis.
Well, as stated above, this episode was directed by John Landis. Alot of you may know him from Animal House or The Blues Brothers, but we horror fans tend to remember him from An American Werewolf in London. The basic storyline to this episode, follows a heavyset male, who in secret, is a serial killer. A new couple, David and Celia, move in the same neighborhood he lives in, and he instantly takes a liking to them, especially the female. And as soon as this episode starts, you'll take an instant liking to our villain, Harold.
I personally thought he was an awesome character, with the way he is always blaring gospel music as he skeletonizes his victims. But anyways, this films picks up with Harold taking care of his grandpa (you'll see what I mean) and proceeds to his new neighbors drunkingly running into a brick statue of some sort in front of his house. When they come back the next day, to make sure it's all going to be taken care of, that statue is already rebuilt, and Harold doesn't seem to be too mad about it, but moreso relieved that they didn't find what was hidden inside of it. Being the gentleman he is, he invites them in for a cup of coffee.
One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know, this couple has found themselves a new best friend. They all seem to get along extremely well at first, with Harold even having such privileges as being seen first when going to the doctor (since his new neighbor is a doctor).I think this couple might view him differently if they knew his entire family were skeletons whom he talked to day and night as if they were still alive. But as I said, they are one big 3-some group of happy friends. That is, until David comes up missing. That gives Harold his big chance to make his move on Celia, and replace David...for good.
Now, for those of you who have seen this episode, or know someone who has, you may know it's not a very violent or graphic episode. Don't let than turn you away from this one, because believe it or not, it's suprisingly good. The character development in this are like that of a feature film. You really get to know all the characters in this like you would in a feature film, but in half the time. As I mentioned earlier, I loved the villain, Harold. He's that typical nice guy that we all know, but with a dark side.
But perhaps the best part, is the twist ending. Normally, I can see a twist ending coming from a mile away. But with this film, I had no clue. There was nothing that even made me think that there would even be a CHANCE of a twist ending. And it's not one of those corny twists where one of the characters have a flashback of shit that didn't even happen in the movie in an attempt to explain the sudden twist. No, this is a legitimate twist. And I loved it. If I had to recommend this movie to any horror fan, it would be to just that, ANY horror fan. I'll give this film a solid 8/10.
