I've seen most of this on TV and it truly wasn't that good; better than some (In fact a lot of) "true haunting" films but still not that scary save for a few parts (Scattered imagery of the house itself, along with the final rampage of the father).
Despite this it was followed by like, 7 sequels (Most of which had nothing to do with the "true events"). The first prequel had it's moments but contained several inaccuracies (A walkman back in the day?), and the others I have yet to see. Amityville Dollhouse is supposed to be "the bottom of the barrel," and The Amityville Curse has yet to even make it to DVD XP
Based on a true story that was claimed by writer Jay Anson......Actually, Jay Anson and the family from the book have recanted on the TRUE EVENTS part and now say it is entirely a work of fiction. Gotta LUV making an honest living these (and those) days. Hehe:zombie:
I love the original Amityville Horror. One of my favorites.
I like both the Original & The Remake, can't say their CLASSIC'S though...

I agree.
I prefer the original. I didnt care for the remake. I actually researched the events of Amityville some time ago and discovered quite a few interesting things. You may ask why would i research something like that? Well i have a background in the paranormal and is also something i do regularly. It started as i was growing up, me and my own family had their own fair share of unexplainable activity and continued on in adulthood. So i have tried to help others with dealing with these kinds of things and pointing them in directions of where they can get help etc. And the Amityville case always struck my interest. As well as a few less publicized cases like the Smurls. The Sallie house is also a unique case.
I wasn't a fan of the original movie all that much. I found it a little boring but funnily enough, I loved the remake of it.
They made one in Louisiana based on (inspired by?) this film...

Ron Defeo Jr. has since stated in a recent interview for a program who's name escapes me that it was sister Dawn who ordered the murders, there were no "voices" there was however severe physical abuse in the family-convenient since no one is alive to contradict him.
Did they ever rule out the fact that he may have been mentally disturbed?

Im not sure-I always was under that impression --I know he is serving life without parole in Dannemora--He would have to be though wouldnt you think? Normal, sane rational people don't murder their entire families.
I'm surprised they haven't already. They should have performed several psychological tests when they found him. Based on what those people were saying he was a druggie so... there is no reason why he shouldn't be examined or sent to a looney bin.
