Dennis Allan is an scientist who visits Haiti on the strength of a rumour of a drug which renders the recipient totally paralyzed but conscious. The drug's effects often fool doctors, who declare the victims dead. Could this be the origin of the "zombie" legend? Alan embarks on a surprising and often surreal investigation of the turbulent social chaos that is Haiti during the revolution which ousted hated dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Often a pawn in a greater game, Alan must decide what is science, what is superstition, and what is the unknown in a anarchistic society where police corruption and witch-doctory are commonplace.
Could this be the origin of the "zombie" legend? .......................No. Zombies are actually mentioned in The Epic of Gilgamesh, which is an epic poem from Ancient Iraq and is among the earliest known works of literary writings, written around 4000 years ago. It says on tablet 6, and I quote-
"I will knock down the gates of the Netherworld, I will smash the door post, and leave the doors flat down. And will let the dead go up and eat the living, and the dead will out number the living."
Oh, and P.S.....Serpent and the Rainbow is one of my favorite movies of all times. But the spike through the penis part?? OUCH!
I agree, that part was agonizing for me even! lol
I love this film... Would there be anything worse than being buried alive, frozen and unable to do anything?? Well maybe being forced to sit through Twilight.....
Or one of the Halloween remakes.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I believe it plays on our fear of not being in control of our lives.
P.s. voodoo scares the hell out of me lol
I haven't seen this film in a long time and when I was younger, I think it bored me. I need to give this another try because a movie, by Wes Craven, about voodoo sounds pretty cool.
I totally remember this movie from back in the dizzle. I should watch it again too.
There was a Twilight Zone episode about a man paralyzed and unable to speak that was going to be operated on, but could see everything. It was in a Metallica video. Help me out Daylight......

Anesthesia awareness - that's an actual risk of surgery, isn't it? I think it happens more often than I'd like to think about.
^ you are correct Masque.
If that ever happened to me I don't think I would ever be put to sleep again.
Ok, I figured it out. This freaking bothered me all day!
It wasn't a twilight zone episode, it was a movie called Johnny Got His Gun (1971). An antiwar movie about an American soilder amputee who loses his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth but he's still conscious and trying to communicate.

You posted a Metallica song. I'm currently waiting for Daylight to see this so that she has a metalgasm.
I think she's so occupied on figuring a ride to sacramento right now. Things must be really serious for her if she's ignoring the best Metallica video of all time.
I can watch that video over and over. Fuckin A.
I just watched The Serpent and the Rainbow last night-it's very good-years ago I read Wade Davis's book-we're talking high school here-I couldnt tell you how accurate any of it is, but it was interesting.

I think that might have been Alfred Hitchcock Presents and it was Richard Widmark maybe-Im not 100% sure though.

I had no idea that it was based on a book.
