This is my number 1 favorite horror movie of all time. It's about a group of researchers who come across a dog that was being hunted by Norwegians. The group kills the Norwegians and takes the dog in only to be confronted by a shape-shifting alien that takes the form of any lifting entity that it kills. Now, nobody can be trusted.
This movie freaked the fuck out of me back when I was about 7 or 8 and it's been a horror movie that I have always loved and held dear to my heart.
The one scene that is forever burned into my head, that creeped me out when I was a kid is when that head took on a life of it's own!!!! great movie...
SHEER BRILLIANCE!!

One of my favourite films of all time.
'Maybe we are at war with Norway'
Great film.
The remake is gonna suck.

Prequel, not as bad

People go to Anartica Base and become paranoid not knowing who the Thing is and die one by one. I see very little difference between the plots.

You do have a point. Even if not a remake it could end up a rehash, trying desperately just to recapture the magic and not bringing anything new and interesting to the table :/
I still think its a pointless movie becuz either way everybody has to die at the end of the movie unless they plan on making a sequal to Carpenters The Thing involving the surviors of both movies.
The prequel will blow the dick of Carpenter's The Thing. They are going to use CGI and not puppets which will be awful. Why make the fucking movie and take away the scariness of not knowing what happened to the Norwegians? WHY???? Because people today demand backstory. They demand to know what happens behind the curtain. We lost our imaginations!!!!! We get movies like Halloween and Halloween II when we let other fucks think of backstory. They won't be able to capture the paranoia like Carpenter's, there is no subtext to the paranoia (because the 80s had the Cold War) and who the fuck cares about what the Norwegians find? GODDAMN IT!!!! Nothing new to add to the table.
If they do make this (probably) steaming pile of goat shit and if it (probably) bombs, I will refuse to ever associate it with Carpenter's or Hawks' masterpieces.
Is a re-make definitely in the pipeline?
'The Thing' is generally regarded as one of the best horror films of all time. I cant see Carpenters film being improved upon.... But that hasn't stopped them before (The Fog re-make anyone?)

The more I hear the arguments against, the more I am persuaded that it's a bad idea XP. I think the whole paranoia angle doesn't need Cold War subtext to work and I think RZ's Halloween was OK by itself, but other than that I can see where you're coming from.
@Fang: Yep. Teaser poster is out and everything.
Classic. That's all I can say.
The teaser poster looks lame. @fangenstein its not considered a remake its a "prequal"
Link me to the teaser post, I need to see this asshole garbage for myself. Briggs, you're right that the Cold War paranoia doesn't need to be in there or any other subtext but then it takes even more away from the movie. Why did the paranoia seem so good in this movie? Because it was during a time in which people were scared of Communism.
For your amusement

Notice how it stills seems to be called just "The Thing"

Man I wouldn't even consider it a teaser.
Bad idea. Bad, bad, bad, bad.
The thought of this movie actually makes me angry, on a physical level... eyes rolled back, fists clenched.
Same here, Jeff. Every time I hear about it I feel like punching a little kid.
