Menlo Park, CA, United States (AHN) -- Google announced Tuesday it has added new networking and sharing features to its free web e-mail service.

The new feature called Buzz allows Gmail users to get updates, including photos and other shared materials, from e-mail contacts. Frequent contacts will be labeled "followers" and the feature can be set to public or private, according to Todd Jackson, Buzz product manager.

A Twitter-like function also allows Gmail users to post and share updates from mobile phones.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin described the Buzz as the latest evolution of social networking,
