If this is the original that's being remade, Bruce's snarky and over-confident personality never showed up until the second or possibly Army of Darkness. The person would have to show the characteristics of Ash in the original: an average, happy, party kind of guy who inevitably snaps but is also pretty scared of the things chasing him.

And that's almost certainly the fact that will destroy this remake before anything else: the fact that the filmmakers are probably gonna play the whole thing for laughs and nostalgia

Very true. I will rely to heavily on nostalgia and won't set out to give Evil Dead the big-budget treatment that Raimi wanted. Additionally, if they give Ashe's personally the Army of Darkness treatment, it will reveal how much research they did before they wrote it.
Since my absence, the news of this remake has gone from mediocre (
http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/10/drug...remake.php), to actually pretty good (
http://collider.com/diablo-cody-evil-dea...ew/127309/), to godawful.
This is the news that made me puke -
http://www.moviehole.net/201150056-exclu...ead-remake. Ah, great, the intervention backstory wasn't enough! Let's throw the shit about the mom in for some poorly manufactured "sympathy!" Dollars to donuts, there's gonna be a scene where one of the Deadites tells the main girl "YOUR MOTHER SUCKS COCKS IN HELL!" or some reasonable poor ripoff thereof, and the girl clenches her teeth and goes "YOU........... CANNOT............. HURT............. ME." And of course, everyone else is "arrogant" or some other trait manufactured to be unsympathetic so we never really feel scared for THEM

.
Also, it's being produced by Ghost House, whose track record is... not good.
Yeah, I lost interest when it was reported Ash would NOT be in the film.
I mean, I'm not really an Evil Dead fan to begin with - but you can't seriously call this movie The Evil Dead without Ash. It's fraudulent and fake as hell to the core. It's A Nightmare on Elm Street without Freddy.
i for one am pretty excited for the remake. As long as it has a serious tone to it and is very dark, it should turn out well. And you cant have the Ash character in it because no one but Bruce Campbell can play the character.

George Clooney, Brad Pitt or Bradley Cooper could all 3 pull it off - imo.
But, this comes back to my previous post ..... we all know Ash is what made
The Evil Dead and with such an iconic character as he is, there's no way to take this "remake" seriously without him. To even label this film 'The Evil Dead' is bullshit.
It goes to show how extremely lazy and stupid the writing team & production staff are to not include the character. They are obviously targeting a much younger audience.
I can easily see this being PG-13, and .......... yeah ......... no thanks. Let's just say for arguement's sake it is rated R - there still is NO Ash. Again, no thanks.
Clearly since Mr. Campbell and Rami are both producing thye obviously saw fit that the Ash character not be in the film.

Well, this brings up the age-old discussion of whether or not creators can be "wrong" about their creations. Not all the time, maybe not this time, but sometimes the authors just lose their touch.

George Clooney might have done it in his early days, but his style has changed too much to pull off Ash now. I highly doubt Pitt could do it; he's best in more confident roles, which the original Ash was not. Don't know enough about Bradley Cooper.
From the news so far, the remake isn't going to be PG-13. Diablo Cody called the screenplay extremely violent (she's seen Cannibal Holocaust... apparently). Though, it could very well still suck.

Yeah, and both are overly protective of their beloved character.

After the mess that was
Jennifer's Body, I don't care for Diablo Cody.
If they're really going for the PG-13 ratung then might as well cancel production and write this off as a loss. No way this movie could work under those contraints and wont have enough breathing room once the MPAA cuts the movie to know end.
