I was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. I'd read extensive spoilers prior to seeing the film (first heard about it from Bravo's original 100 Scariest Movie Moments), but none of them had told me about all the smug foreshadowing the villagers would convey to Det. Howie, nor the subjective madness of the town's "festivities" on the final day of action.
I'd call it a horror/thriller hybrid. Now, I call Saw a pure thriller, so my definition of horror vs. thriller is different than many. Still, whilst I felt Saw primarily aimed to confuse the audience, I felt that there was a lot more in Wicker Man meant primarily to creep an audience out. These elements make it a great horror movie in my book.
An 8.5/10.
