TalkHorror - Horror Talk For All Horror Fans

Anyone else here a fan of HP Lovecraft's work ? My first year of college I got a little obsessed with it, I read everything he ever wrote. Even did a 20 mins presentation on his life for a class, we had to pick an author and talk about them.

If you haven't read any of his books, I'd suggest you pick up one. He's inspired many modern authors. Some of my favorite of his were The Call of Cthulhu, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Dagon and the thing on the doorstep.

I'm pretty sure some of you have seen some of the film adaptations of his work, like dagon, beyond the wall of sleep, the dunwich horror etc, but none come close to actually reading the stories.

One interesting fact about Lovecraft is that he never truly had a book published during his lifetime.

From a private hospital for the insane near Providence, Rhode Island, there recently disappeared an exceedingly singular person. He bore the name of Charles Dexter Ward, and was placed under restraint most reluctantly by the grieving father who had watched his aberration grow from a mere eccentricity to a dark mania involving both a possibility of murderous tendencies and a profound and peculiar change in the apparent contents of his mind. Doctors confess themselves quite baffled by his case, since it presented oddities of a general physiological as well as psychological character.

I love HP Lovecraft. Actually spent about 3 hours a few years back looking for and finding his grave in Rhode Island Cemetary. Very exciting. There has been so much talk about filming The Shadow over Innsmouth. I hope that happens soon. So many current and former horror stars are influenced by his work, of course. Also, check out From Beyond...one of my favorite adaptations by Stuart Gordon. I mention this in my review of stuck.....

LOL I wish I could say I am a fan but, I actually have not read any of his work.

You should check out that link then, you can read most of it online too. He wrote a lot of short stories. The only other author that I'd say comes close to the same level as Lovecraft would probably be Brian Lumley. I'm such a bookworm. On a good week I usually go through 2-3 books at the least. I have a lovecraft anthology in 3 volumes around here somewhere, i'm not sure if that was ever published like that in english, the one I have is in french, but I do have quite a few of his books in english.

Hellz Yeah! Finally! More H.P. Lovecraft Fans!!!!! Just ask these other peeps how many times I have flung that name around.

Okay, I have read ALOT of the Lovecraft Mythos that is actually by Lovecraft himself, but not by the other original authors of his time. Ya know, I have never actually taken the time to even look up his crew. Bet they had some good ones too.

Recently, the two best Lovecraftian Mythos stories I have read are 1. "N", by Stephen King, that was a great short story. Monsters from Beyond, and People going completely fuckin bugnuts, and then killing themselves. Oh, the skin between the dimensions were THIN! 2. A Portrait in Emerald by Neil Gaiman. It is a short story that completely throws the Old Ones in your face. They rule over the humans, and the humans are really happy about it. Truly an original Lovecraftian story.

As for movies, I've seen "In the Mouth of Madness" which I really enjoyed, but can't think of many more off the top of my head. If anyone has any suggestions, Drop 'em

RE Animator, Dagon, From Beyond.

Apparently The Curse, and The Resurrected are fairly good adaptations. I actually found Bride of Re-Animator closer to the original story than the original film (Though you need to watch the original for it to make sense). There is also a movie called The Dunwich Horror, which I'm not certain about. Steer away from Cthulhu Mansion if you're looking for Lovecraft BTW, apparently it has nothing to do with Cthulhu. Also, The Lurking Fear is supposed to be no good >.>

The Dunwich Horror (which has been *cry* remade), Beyond the Wall of Sleep, the tomb, Masters of Horror - Dreamd in the Witch House credits him as a writer, Beyond the Wall of Sleep. There's many more, but I think these are the most well known that haven't been listed here yet.

The Dunwich horror was the first one I saw, it's an interesting movie. Lovecraft's stories aren't exactly the easiest ones to adapt to film.

Brian Lumley wrote some short stories, after Lovecraft, at the beginning of his career. I find that his work is probably some of the best as far as authors who are still alive. If you're a lovecraft fan, he's definitely worth looking into.

Actually, I thought the unnamable was pretty decent. It has been a while though since i have seen that one.

I do love reading me some books!

I think it was Lion's Gate that sent me a DVD screener of Dagon a few years ago, and if I remember correctly it was in subtitles? People with gills, etc? Had a really eerie feeling to it but never could get into it enough to finish it...and never ready any of his books, although I'm not opposed to doing so.
