The movie It was scary. I don't think any of us have looked at clowns quite the same again.

For me, when I was a kid, the ONLY horror movies that scared me were 1. The Exorcist, and 2. The Gate. I was raised very religiously and the devil was the scariest thing there was! Now, since I think the "devil" is only in the hearts of people, only the News scares me.

haha true! hey the NEWS really is scary!

True, but it's not meant to be. I endorse the great purpose of horror being to scare, but being the news just cheating!

Upon receiving it for a sort of early birthday present, I have to add MANIAC to my list of selections for movies that actually scared me...

It may not be the most cohesive storyline, but Frank Zito is truly a creepy, tragic, hateable and lovable figure to observe throughout his nightly murders... The blend of chillingly realistic, sleazy insanity and horrifying cinema thrills combine to make a horror classic worthy to watch on a dark night. Though perhaps not as consistantly thrilling, Maniac's dreadful sense of uneasiness ranks it among classics like TCM '74 and The Evil Dead (My current big-boys when I think "scary")

Ju-On scared the pants off me and my friends. A lot of it had to do with the circumstances under which we saw it: it was a sold-out midnight screening at TIFF. Fear was thick in the air in that dark room and you couldn't not be afraid.

Ju-On was pretty freakin' spooky. Japan is such and alien culture to us, and it made the strangeness and creepiness that much worse.

True Briggsy, but nothing in horror really scares me anymore. I have a hard time watching movies these days, cause I'm checking out gore effects, and how the acting is, and if the director is any good. To scare me, a GREAT horror movie would make me completely forget I am watching a movie, and that hasn't happened in eons.

I consider myself blessed in that respect, I can still let myself get scared by horror; put myself in the victims' shoes and whatnot. I don't have to forget I'm watching a movie perse (Though it definitely does help overall to have all the elements you mention). Hope you can find one that frightens you yet! I'm personally still trying to pick out my besties in this respect! Wink

I agree Loki.
I can find myself not getting scared either...

Hey! Maybe Paranormal Activity might change that for me. A hardcore horror fan can wish.........................

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (original). This one still effects me the same way it did the first time I saw it about 20 years ago. I guess it's the gritty realism of the film -- you can almost feel the sweltering heat, smell the stench of Leatherface and his surroundings.

Another one that gave me goosebumps was RINGU, the first time I saw it. I remember my wife was out of town that weekend, and after I finished watching the movie I slept facing the wall. I just knew if I turned around Sadako would be standing over me, staring at me with that one wild eye through her long black locks.

What a great feeling. Not something that happens very often to this jaded old horror fan, to say the very least.

You and me both, brotha! TCM is probably one of the most perfect horror films I've seen; I get a good bit scared each time I watch, which is a good deal of the reason why I watch Wink

I found The Strangers real scary.

Well, the first movie that I saw that really horrified me that no other horror movie will ever do again was The Thing (1982) because when the dog kennel scene came on screen, I never expected that to happen. For me, the gore, the body mutilation seemed so real for me and keep in mind I was about 10 or 11 years old. Also, I tried watching the movie again and I still couldn't get through it. Eventually I did and I loved the movie.

The first movie that really got me was the Exorcist, I was about 10 and my mom told me not to watch it, lol well she had gone down to the street to sit with the neighbors, and I decided to watch it anyways, well let's just say I wound up running out of the house and down to sit with my mom LOL

Another one that got me when I was a kid was Freddy, no joke, if I watched those movies, I would dream of him every night for a straight week, and just as he was about to get me I would wake up.....I got over that ,only thing I need to get over is , I hate seeing anything done with eyes, I can't look :eg:
