...If they weren't franchises?? What if by some theoretical action they hadn't made sequels to Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and all the rest?

Most people, I think, ignore the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels already. I think TCM would still be a classic among the community and would probably still get a lackluster (In my opinion) remake. I think the same would be true for Halloween, except I think it might even be more of a classic had Michael not become an "icon".

Friday the 13th might be held in different regard, though I don't think necessarily higher. Though it's a very creepy film by itself, F13 seems made for a franchise. I think lack of sequels would take some of the weight off Mrs. Voorhees being the precursor to her son's rampage, and some weight off the final scare of Jason actually popping out of the water like he's going to go on said rampage... Had Friday the 13th stayed one film I believe it would be a small classic along the lines of say, Madman, but more subdued. ...Of course, this is somewhat to be expected as the producers wanted F13 made mostly just as something to compete with Halloween. Really, I think if the series would have an ideal image if it had stayed at 4 parts, with the death of "fast Jason".

Well it's still an interesting theory to discuss if I say so myself... and comon, there are some things that could have been better as a single movie; take The Amityville Horror or The Howling XP
