The Fourth Kind (2009) - TerrorScribe - 02-20-2010 The Fourth Kind (2009) Rated PG-13 Written and Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi Starring Milla Jovovich Will Patton Elias Koteas Running Time: 98 minutes Growing up, I can remember many a Saturday afternoon plopped down in front of the TV waiting for one of my favorite shows to come on: "In Search ofâ¦" It was my little nugget of the weird and mysterious in an otherwise ordinary life. I watched wide-eyed as Leonard Nimoy added his sci-fi gravitas to topics like Bigfoot and the Bermuda Triangle and witchcraft and UFOs. I loved UFO stories. I liked the idea of life out there. I even did my sixth grade science project on UFOs. So, I'm a big fan of extraterrestrial life. However⦠I am not a fan of overwrought "dramatizations." I am not a fan of stupid people. I'm not a fan of wasting an hour and a half of my life. And therefore, I am not a fan of "The Fourth Kind." "The Fourth Kind" stars Milla Jovovich, tossing her second straight gutterball this year (the first being the criminally predictable thriller, "the Perfect Getaway"). We first see her, interestingly enough, as herself, announcing very solemnly that what we are about to see contains "rare archival footage" and that the decision as to whether or not this is a true story resides strictly with us, the audience. It segues into a split screen of Dr. Abigail Tyler (whose work this is "based" on) and Jovovich as Tyler. Apparently, politics isn't the strangest thing going on in Alaska, as we find that people who think they are just having sleeping disorders are really being abducted by aliens who disguise themselves as owls and speak Sumerian. Really. Admittedly, that's somewhat of an oversimplification of some plot elements, but it's still fairly accurate. It's also fairly accurate to say that "the Fourth Kind" is not a very good movie. Why? Because my leg can only be pulled so far. OK, I can believe that a psychologist may have found people who, while under hypnosis, say that they've been abducted by aliens. OK, said aliens put a mental image of a big white owl in their brains. Oh, and they speak Sumerian and there's someone who can actually recognize and interpret the spoken language even though it's been dead for thousands of years. Uh huh⦠And even with film, tape and eyewitness accounts, no one believes it. What's that? The main character may just be batshit crazy? After all this, I think I may be, too. Mostly, "the Fourth Kind" suffers from trying too hard to be simultaneously believable and unbelievable and only ends up being irritating. The characters, as portrayed in writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi script, are maddeningly stupid. Ordinarily I could probably go with it â since when people are presented with something overwhelmingly bizarre, they sometimes refuse to acknowledge the evidence. But the movie seems to try to lead us down two conflicting paths â one saying "Yes, we want you to believe this," and the other saying, "Hey, what are you doing? She's crazy." Even so, if that were the only problem with the movie, I might be able to forgive it, but they just keep piling it on, like the convoluted lies of a man caught with his penis somewhere it shouldn't be ("I was just helping it over the fence."). After so long, you just want it to stop. All in all, it plays out like any number of cable dramatization shows and left me feeling like I'd experienced an alien abduction myself: One night in October, I was removed from my home, subjected to torture and found that I'd lost approximately an hour and a half of my life that I will never have back. I think I would have preferred the anal probe. http://www.redcarpetcrash.com/2009/11/05/review-the-fourth-kind/ The Fourth Kind (2009) - Lilith - 02-20-2010 When this came out i looked forward to go seeing it. The trailers seemed to leave so much to the imagination, but left you wanting more. I was however disapointed to an extent when i saw this. I thought i was going to see a movie about alien abductions etc. But i was left more with the feeling of seeing a movie about demon possession. In researches i have done thru out my time, convinced me enough to know this wasnt about aliens. But thats just my own conclusions. And i could get into a huge essay about this also to try to point out what im talking about. But i wont bore no one with that, lol. What i dont understand is why they just didnt be up front with what i feel the real story was behind the movie and not disguise it with an alien story. The movie made much more sense to me once i put 2 and 2 together and figured out the real story of what was really going on. So i actually liked the movie. But i can understand why people felt disapointed and stuff, because they thought they were going to see a good alien abduction story. But this is just my opinion and conclusions in a nutshell. The Fourth Kind (2009) - Bojangles - 02-20-2010 I still need to see this. Awesome review, TerrorScribe. The Fourth Kind (2009) - FreddysFingers - 02-21-2010 HAHA!!!! I am so glad I did not waste my money on this. Could you explain why you thought it was about Demons? You won't bore me. I'm just curious. Now that you mention it, that DOES make a lot more sense than alien abduction. Or if you really want to keep in theme with the movie and their Van Daniken-eque theories, the aliens are the basis for demonic possession legends and events. Just sayin'. The Fourth Kind (2009) - Friday The 13th - 02-23-2010 I watched bits, and heard bits of this shitty film.... ![]() For the LOVE of GOD! Don't watch it! The Fourth Kind (2009) - FreddysFingers - 02-23-2010 I also did some research when this film came out and I have to agree with Lilith here. The signs and what I saw on the trailer made it seem like it was about demon possession. I looked at old MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) documents and there were only about 2 or 3 cases in Nome dealing with possible UFOs. These cases were dismissed and reported simply as missing persons. The Fourth Kind (2009) - Lilith - 02-24-2010 Bojangles Wrote:Could you explain why you thought it was about Demons? You won't bore me. I'm just curious. Ok, no long essay here. Tried to sum it up as shortly as i could. I came to my conclusions on The Fourth Kind thru much research in the past on things like this way before this movie even came out. Because i take an interest in alot of things. So when i saw this movie that was supposed to be about alien abductions, i noticed something seemed to be way off with it. I started to make connections in the film that were consistant with demonic possession/demons in general. I have found that some people beleive that aliens are actually demons themselves. And maybe thats where this movie was going, maybe this movie was potraying that aspect of peoples opinion. I just know for myself, that out of all the alien oriented movies i have seen that dealt with abduction etc. I have never seen the demonic undertones in those movies as i have in this one. Now, when researching alien cases or watching alien movies, that is alien movies dealing with aliens on a serious note. For example movies dealing with it on a "True Story" basis. i have never came across an instance where a disembodied voice was either captured on audio or ever coming thru an individual. However this kind of thing is consistant with demonic possession or a demonic presence. Also, the voice is heard saying things like "I am God", "I am the saviour" etc. Never heard of this type of thing ever equated with alien abduction or aliens either. Again, this is however another sign of demonic possession or presence. According to research done on demons, demons are known to speak in ancient dead languages. But that does not mean the culture that originally spoke the language was evil. During exorcisms many languages have been heard from the victims of possession. Even Aramaic, and aramaic was said to be the language Jesus spoke. So they can speak in just about any language they want. Latin is a common language heard coming from alot of victims of possession. Sumerian was the language identified in the movie The Fourth Kind. Sumerian has also been a language heard coming from victims of possession. Also, the man on the bed that the dr. put under hypnosis sprung upwards not only speaking with a demonic voice but also his face contorted. In extreme cases of possession there is documentation of bodies being contorted in unrealistic fashion. Levitation we also saw in the movie. Which is also another phenomena associated with demonic possession. Although victims of alien abduction claim to have been lifted up from where they are standing, laying etc. Many will argue that there is one for sure telling sign of a demon/evil spirit and that is it claiming to be God. But anyway, thats why i felt the way i do about the movie. Its my opinion based on what i know of things to be. The movie puts off many mixed messages and leaves plenty to be open for interpretation. And this is mine. The Fourth Kind (2009) - Ruby - 02-25-2010 i totaly agree lilith about it seemin more demonic then alien I mean how many alien movies do you know that show a persons jaw or body being so distorted without being around that it snaps and paralyses of kills em even The Fourth Kind (2009) - Lilith - 02-25-2010 Ruby Wrote:i totaly agree lilith about it seemin more demonic then alien I mean how many alien movies do you know that show a persons jaw or body being so distorted without being around that it snaps and paralyses of kills em even Well you know that when we went to go see that, i was like WTF?
