I’m really not good with blood.
Back when I was in Marine Corp boot camp, one of the first in a string of constant dangers we were exposed to was needles: lots and lots of needles. The whole first week, when we weren’t exercising, being yelled at or otherwise… indoctrinated, they were sticking us with needles: a vaccine here, an inoculation there and more than a few samples of blood. During one particular sample taking, I decided to watch. There was something hypnotic about the thick, deep-red stream that filled the tube. Hypnotic. So very…
And that was about the time I passed out.
Yes, big bad Marine and latent horror fan passed out while they were drawing my blood. True story. In the meantime, I learned to put up with a multitude of pains and annoyances. The latest annoyance I’ve learned to put up with goes by the name of “Saw 3-D”.
In this, the supposed “final” installment, we follow Jigsaw survivor, Bobby Dagan (Sean Patrick Flannery), who has gone on from his ordeal to become a motivational speaker. There’s only one small hitch: he’s not really a Jigsaw survivor. He’s faking it for the money and fame. Needless to say, this doesn’t sit well with Jigsaw (Tobin Bell, who we see in a flashback) and Dagen and his entourage are taken and the games start anew. Throughout this, the power struggle between Jigsaw’s widow, Jill (Betsy Russell) and Officer Hoffman (Costas Mandylor).
“Saw 3-D”, like many horror movies that have come out in the last year or so, was an endurance test: patches of hysterical screaming and gore improbably stitched together into a grotesquely uninteresting tapestry. Or, since this installment was filmed in 3-D, we are more appropriately placed into a diorama. The only problem is that there in nothing in the environment that engages us as viewers. The traps are gruesome and cringe-inducing, yes, but the victims in said traps are merely that – victims – and nothing more. There are really no emotional anchors in the movie; Jill and Hoffman are the only emotional touchstones and then, only because they have been with us for a few movies now. Otherwise, we are left clutching at shadows, oftentimes finding nothing there. For the majority of the film, all we are left to do is follow Dagen as he staggers from trap to trap for the inevitable death of each of his superficial but still remarkably unlikable friends. There was a time in the series when the purpose of the ordeal was to make the victim appreciate the life he or she was taking for granted. Now, any higher purpose has been set aside and the “Saw” series has devolved into a simple game of revenge. Even when they try to make a point of showing the positive life-changing aspects of Jigsaw’s traps, it’s quickly set aside for the revenge tale of Jigsaw reaching out from beyond the grave to punish Dagen. Similarly, the Jill/Hoffman storyline is more focused on the revenge aspect than it is about a battle of philosophies or legacy.
“Saw 3-D”, is a sad shade of its former self; the resemblance these days being only cosmetic. Next Halloween, we can rest safe in our beds knowing that the torture is over.
Or is it?
As every horror fan knows, no monster is truly dead until it dies at the box office. “Saw VIII” anyone?

I felt the film suffered from a strong lack of philosophy myself. Personally, I think the whole damn thing was way too short to convey any of the stuff that it should have. Honestly I was so disappointed in VII that I can't even fully voice all that I disliked about it yet; it's almost stunning how much went wrong. I thought VII might turn out like Freddy's Dead (a poorly made, fan service filled, fan-spiting mess), but I never thought it'd be AS ill conceived...
And I do believe there won't be another, at least not following the current timeline (a spinoff, maybe); those other films did not have word-of-god to back up the idea that they would be the last ones.

Are you serious Daylight? There's so many more questions unanswered. Like who were the other 2 people helping Gordon take down Hoffman. What's happens to Hoffman once Gordon leaves? Because there the possible chance of him breaking his foot with something and escaping. What ever happened to Detective Matthews son? What happend to the little girl from Saw 3? What happend to Gordons family and why he did switch sides so fast? So many unaswered questions to a REALLY dissapointing movie. Worst movie in the series.

I don't even want to get started on this. Bottom line, there are legit questions that I want answered (most of which Blue has already touched base upon), and the whole purpose of Jigsaw was lost. The ending wasn't even satisfying and it still leaves it open a sequel. Probably a contingency plan just in case they need money after their next cliche movie doesn't make it.

Lionsgate did a heck of a job of gamesmanship with this movie. While giving the illusion of answering question, they've really just wiped the slate clean in case they wanted to continue the series. No more Hoffman/Jill storyline to worry about and virtually everything that ties the series to the original elements are gone. They can continue things - with Gordon taking up Jigsaw's mantle - and pretty much do whatever they want.
They already made their budget back the first week and beat back PA2 showing that there still is a little life left in the series. There may be another Saw movie next year yet. :reddisgust:

Studios don't care about the "hardcore" fans. In reality, hardcore fans only make up a small fraction of the ticket buying audience. Why do you think comic book movies are so tough and so often screwed up. Because the studios are less concerned about appeasing the hardcore fans and more interested in expanding the appeal to the general public. Think about it - in the first Saw film, there were what... a couple or three actual traps in the movie? This time: ELEVEN? A lot of the first movie was about moral dilemmas and in this last one, it was an afterthought. The studio wrecked this series a long time ago.

That scene totally did not feel organic to the rest of the movie.It kinda felt like they just had to squeeze in another trap to make quota. Who was that guy? Was he in any of the other movies? Why should I give a shit if he lived or not?
