Which type of zombies do you prefer George Romero's slow weak shamblers or Dawn of the Dead 2004, 28 Days/Weeks Later fast running zombies.

Slow shamblers every time. They are SO much more creepy. And that thing they do where they hypnotize people with fear so that they stand still and let themselves be eaten: totally epic.

That and there is just something wrong with your zombie if it has enough motor control to run at high speeds. I'm just sayin'...

I agree slow shamblers and IMO 28 days they were not zombies they were still alive and infected with the rage virus.:avatar33780_1:

Oh shit, Oldman!!! We just agreed on something. The world is going to EXPLODE!!!! Wink

I have nothing eloquent to add but that I agree! Slow shamblers with mind control all the way!

Zombies - Slow Shamblers or Fast Runners - FreddysFingers - 07-27-2011

Slow zombie for many reasons but mainly because they're a lot scarier that way. They don't beat you with adrenaline, they beat you with numbers and are quite deceiving.

I agree with Lynn. Infected aren't zombies. They're not dead so I don't mind if they can sprint like Linford Christie.

Zombies seem more fitted to being shamblers and slow. I can't imagine a re-animated yet rotting corpse shifting at a vast rate.

Don't get me wrong though, I liked the DOTD (2004) remake.

The Dawn of the Dead remake was great because it REMADE the movie. It took a bold step by turning the zombie subgenre upside down with manically fast zombies. It was truly a revolutionizing zombie flick in the same vain as Return of the Living Dead.

I support slow zombies as well. Some guys call 'em pushovers due to their speed, and pretty much discount their strength in numbers - "yeah, I've got buku guns! I could survive any zombie apocalypse and remake society in my own image!!" um, no. This ain't Hollywood; it's HARD to get a perfect headshot, and your guns DO run out of bullets, which aren't just gonna be found lying all over the place.

Of course, fast zombies are the same, only faster... but in terms of fear-factor, they don't measure up. Slow zombies prolong the suspense, giving your chance after teasing chance that you'll escape, only to (oftentimes) surround you and tear into your flesh slowly. Add to that the idea that slow zombies are usually a little quieter (greatly multiplying the element of suspense when you find zombies slowly "work their way out of the woodwork" when you thought a place was safe), and that gives them a definitive win in my book.

It's funny that you mention guns because a quote by Max Brooks sums up how I feel about them, "Use a machete because you know… blades don't need reloading."

Zombie vs. Shark. Best fight ever. AND he was a shambler. LOL

They've been playing Dawn of the Dead all night on satellite... I hadn't convinced myself to watch it yet but maybe I will now.

I did like the remake of Dawn of the Dead so fast zombies can be successful. I think its perhaps because they stayed true to all the other elements I wished to see and kept the essence of the original like Freddy said.

That aside I am afraid I am suffering major zombie burnout of late. There are a glut of cheap, shoddy zombie movies out there these days because they are relatively easy to create on a budget. Unfortunately with the will and the means doesn't always come the talent...

Agreed on both points, the second especially though. Though the flow seems to be moving slower now, I feel there have been a helluva lot of generic zombie films recently, most of which following a not-strict, but still very boring formula.

Zombies - Slow Shamblers or Fast Runners - FreddysFingers - 07-31-2011

In the indie zombie scene, it seems like zombies have become less scary and act more like tools for retarded or stupid comedy. I'm not talking about Zombieland, I'm talking about movies like Night of the Living Dorks or Zombie Nation. That's a good point you brought up Lollie.

Zombies - Slow Shamblers or Fast Runners - Dr. Briggs - 07-31-2011

Agreed on Freddy's point as well, and I wasn't even a fan of Zombieland personally (though Shaun of the Dead was good and Hide and Creep had some charm to it).

The fact that zombies are "hip" today, so big in modern pop culture and thus oft over-analyzed for mockery (much like the Universal monsters have long been), is a big reason they are losing their status as horrific figures despite the surge in "serious" zombie films as well.

Zombies - Slow Shamblers or Fast Runners - FreddysFingers - 08-02-2011

I think a lot of horror movies are ending up that way, where indie directors are aware that making a horror movie requires no talent so they use it as an incentive to create retarded comedy. It seems like zombie movies laid the groundwork and the rest followed shortly after. in terms of zombies, not many people are even aware that zombies were never like the Dawn of the Dead zombies let alone the Romero zombies from Night of the Living Dead. Zombies, in film, were once people put under hypnotic spell.

Who died and left you king of the zombies? I think that they are zombies or at least zombie like.

But a machete will stick in a zombies skull, like in Dawn of the Dead 1978.
