THE RATS by James Herbert - Hammerfan - 09-23-2011

My all time fave horror novel has got to The Rats by James Herbert. I first read it back in 1975, and thought it was just awesome!

His second novel, THE FOG, also had a great impact on me in terms of its sheer horror and thrills. And who could forget that horrific shears scene in the school gym!

Any other Herbert fans here?

Ive read his books in the past and I think The Rats was the basis for Deadly Eyes(1983)

That's right. Deadly Eyes was the movie version of The Rats. The book was so much better though.

Did you know they used daschunds in the movie made up to look like rats?

James Herbert's style of writing was, in the early days, very graphic and explicit. His first two novels - The Rats and The Fog - were the two best examples of how gory and in-your-face his writing ability could be.

In his later books, however, he did tend to tone down the blood and gore somewhat, as is evidenced in books like Haunted and The Magic Cottage.

Looking forward very much to his next novel, ASH, which will be out, I think, next year.

I might have to see if I can pick up The Fog somewhere. I'm always willing to read new horror author novels.

If you read THE FOG, I can guarantee you will never forget the notorious school gym scene. One of the most talked about and memorable scenes in horror fiction history!
