Dr. BriggsHorror villains you felt bad for... or opposite
#1
I got this off another site, but I thought it was mucho interesante, so, I bring it here. There have been plenty of characters in horror who invoke pathos, many of them the very villains we are supposed to hate! Or... sometimes, there are villains who are just successfully assholes.

So, who tops your lists of villains who invoke said emotions at either pole?

I Felt bad for:

Duane Bradley from Basket Case - Just about every shitty thing out there happens to him in the Basket Case series

All the killers from Alone in the Dark ('81) - One was a cabin-fevered gung-ho war vet with delusions, one was a simpleminded pyromaniac, one was an obese dude who happened to like little girls, and one was a half-good-natured schizo. They all just got a new doctor at the wrooooooong time :*(

Norman Bates in the sequels - BIG TIME sympathy for him.... What with obsessed victims, old delusions, wicked copycats and muckrakers going after him every which way, you basically hope for a happy ending for him every second of him taking new lives

Jack Torrance (TV version of The Shining) - This guy was not a total family abuser and you really hoped he wouldn't go over the edge for the longest time

Dr. Weir from Event Horizon - His work killed his wife, demons took his work (And his mind), I felt sad that the only thing he really has going for him by the end are the demons Sad

Melton from Valentine - I was honestly glad when it seemed he wasn't the killer in the end... I still think it might not have been him, sure it was the guy, but who said he was the killer? Tongue

Toulon from Puppet Master 2 - He really cared for his creations, and for his wife... He just expressed it wrong >.>

Willard Stiles - Obvious choice there! His only friends were rats, sure he screwed them over for human love later, but then they screwed him more over!

Herbert West - Who doesn't love Jeff Combs?? Can't help but sympathize for the guy as his shit comes back to kill him Tongue

I hated:

The Candyman - I initially thought about putting him on the previous list, but hell for all we know he could have been a bastard pre-death... His love for his woman does not excuse killing just about everyone else he meets, keeping an entire community in fear, etc....

Jigsaw - I can understand and sort of sympathize with him... But he's just so damn SMUG! >.<

Chucky - Manipulative, sadistic slaughter obsessed turd... Nuff said

Otis, Mama and Baby out of The Devil's Rejects - Despite attempts from the film to make them sympathetic, I still could not forget that they killed the poor rodeo clown wannabe... and those other guys Sad . Spaulding and Tiny were OK though...

Fred Krueger - Happy bastard deserves the original ending to Freddy's Dead... And that is not an issue to take lightly X(

Peyton from The Hand that Rocks the Cradle - Just a self important bitch pure and simple!

The Leprechaun - Doesn't care about shit but his gold, and gets his kicks from hurting human beings any way he can, whether he really has to or not >.>

Martin from The Item - Though not "the villain" per se, he was BY FAR the most hateable character, in fact, one of the most hateable characters I have ever hated >.<

ohh interesting topic! it will take me a while to think of some

the one that comes to mind right away is Vincent from House of Wax. his whole life he was cursed with having a deformed face and let his horrible brother boss him around. he just always felt like a freak cause his brother told him he was one. poor guy :/

Victor from Underworld, kinda not really horrorish...
But I felt bad for him a tiny bit.
I gues I felt he was a good man in a few ways,
he just didn't believe in mixing with the Lycans.

not to play the obvious card but Carrie...
she got the crown...
at least for the night had the guy...t

hen the pig blood...ugh...not to mention her MOTHER?!

did anyone else think the detention sequence down to the girl getting smacked and not having her hive back her up is one of the best scenes in the movie?

Having seen it recently I think I could add Gunther from Crawlspace to both lists... but mostly the "hate" list.

On one hand we got him killing tons of innocent people and wallowing in hideous self-delusion...

On the other hand: "...So be it..." ...Tis sad Sad

----

Another "mostly hated" is Aric out of Hunting Humans... He almost gained my sympathy while he was trying to survive the other "hunter" out to get him... but that ending pretty much killed any chance he had for my pity
“The Fright Night remake is a film which taps into the audience’s deepest rooted fears, such as those of vampires throwing motorcycles at them. I dread the thought of a vampire throwing a refrigerator or a deskjet printer or... I’d better stop before I give myself nightmares”

Frankenstein's Monster . . . but then, he wouldn't really have been a villain, would he? Not at all. He was just misunderstood. So let's see . . . .

Great topic.

I feel very sorry for Arnie at the end of CHRISTINE. No, he wasn't the movie's main villian, obviously, but he was "possessed" at the end. Considering he was behind the wheel when Christine was trying to kill his girlfriend.

I *almost* feel sorry for "John Doe" at the end SE7EN for about half a second, when he almost starts crying to get Somerset and Mills to understand his plan. But just *almost*. He's batshit crazy, as Mills is quick to point out. LOL

I agree with your mention of Arnie, and Christine isn't one of my favorite books or films but his death is something really emotional after seeing his character early in the proceedings... Sad
