Don't get me wrong, I like the movie (it's okay), but there are some things that really annoy me.
#1: Eben's (Josh Hartnett) attitude really annoys me. He acts like a hurt emo kid through most of the film.
#2: When the guy is in the Diner, the one whom helped the Vampires, and he's causing a bit of unease, Eben asks him to accompany him outside of the Diner. He refuses, and then, out of no where, Stella is holding a pistol to the back of the guys head. What in the hell is this? Then, you're telling me that Eben has the nerve to arrest that guy? Dude, you're ex-girlfriend just pulled a gun out, in a local Diner, and put it to the back of another persons head. Of course, Eben isn't going to arrest her. He just lets her off with a "Does the Fire Marshall let you carry that thing?", or something like that.
#3: Another thing that bothers me is when Eben decides to become a Vampire himself, so he can save Stella and a little girl. So, you'd rather save an ex-girlfriend, that won't even try to talk things out with you, than live for your Brother whom has already lost everyone? I'm assuming their parents are dead. I don't remember if anything about them was mentioned in the film or not, and he's just lost his Grandmother. So, you're going to basically kill yourself so you can save your Ex-Girlfriend, and leave your Brother with no one in this world? That just doesn't make sense to me. Not only that, but after he fights the head Vampire, and defeats him, the sun begins to rise almost immediately. Couldn't you have waited like five minutes and accomplished the same thing, but without killing yourself?
That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure I could come up with some more.

I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. It's a little short on details and backstory - some people like that, some don't. Granted, there's the mini episodes on FEARNET you can watch to fill alot of that in, but still....
Her pulling the gun didnt surprise me. Having spent some time in Alaska, it didn't strike me odd that a women that works alone most of the time in remote areas of Alaska carries a gun. A gun is almost a necessity out there - if you get stranded, it's way to secure food and stave off predators....or in some cases, horny, lonely oil workers
His choice to become one of them didn't bother me either. It was a pretty sure bet that if he didn't, everyone was going to die - both Stella & his brother alike. But the "I would die to save you" theme is much more "tear jerking" & romantic if you center it around your love, rather than your brother....unless you're from Kentucky.
What bothered me is, ok, he's one of them now. He challenges the Alpha vamp, no doubt the leader of this "clan" for years? Decades? who knows? That guy has been at the top of the food chain and in charge for a long time, and Eben comes waltzing in and kicks his ass? And if it was that damn easy, why not take out the rest of them? If the others couldn't challenge him for leadership, they must be weaker, right?
Aside from the weak ending, I enjoyed it. I thought it was a pretty good story, and a nice break from the romanticized view of vampires that seems to be in style. The gore was good, & I liked his use of aerial shots to show the scope of the carnage.

I'm not saying it's surprising that she's carrying a gun. I don't blame anyone for carrying a gun. I'm just saying that she was certainly quick on the draw. Well, in my opinion.
LOL @ the Kentucky remark. I guess you're right, in the aspect, but if he would have waited like 5 minutes the sun would have came up and poof, no more Vampires.
You know, that's one thing that bothered me as well. He made that battle look easy, and it was very lack luster. I was also surprised that the other Vampires didn't jump in to help their leader. After the battle was over, the sun began to rise and the other vampires retreated. See what I'm saying about the waiting 5 minutes thing? lol
The aerial shots were nice, and I have no problem admitting that. I mean, I liked the movie as well. All those bloody snow shots were nice.

We're probably putting more thought into this than the director did.
Three reasons I can think of for being quick on the draw:
1) Her fumbling around for the gun probably wouldn't have been as cool, and it needs to be quick to have the element of surprise - you weren't expecting her to pull a gun.
2) If she fumbled around, those damn feminists would scream the director was implying women can't handle firearms.
3) Wouldn't you make sure you could handle a gun if you had to pull it on a large, horny oil worker? He won't politely wait.
The only reason I can think of for why the other vampires didn't jump in is an animal or tribal mentality - it was a direct challenge to the Alpha, a fight for dominance. Or they just didn't expect him to win.
As far as waiting for the sun to come up, I think he expressed the need to stop them - otherwise they would just move on and do all this again. The town was about to blow up, and without the survivors (and there wouldn't have been any had he not done that, most likely) the deaths would have been chalked up to an industrial accident....which is probably the better option, when you're the only person alive in a town full of slaughtered people and try to blame it on vampires to investigators.

Lol I would say that we probably are. I wasn't talking about her expertise with a firearm, I was saying that I thought she was going overboard by pulling a gun out on the guy in the first place. I just thought that it was unnecessary.
I guess that could be why they didn't jump in. Damn, that head Vampire was a wimp, though.
However, he only killed the head Vampire. The rest of them retreated immediately following the defeat of their "leader", because they didn't have time to waste due to the sun coming up. So, even if he wanted to kill them all and prevent further carnage, he wouldn't be able to. He turned into a vampire and only defeated one of them. Also, the fire never got to that car that Stella and the little girl were hiding under, nor did it reach the place they were all held up in. Also, it would have been easier to explain it to investigators when you show them the flipped over cars, and plus there was at least one head the Vampires propped up on a stick, lol.

But wouldn't the vampire head burn up when the sun hit? You'll look even crazier saying "Yah I know, it's just a stick, but there TOTALLY was a vampire head on it".
I have to watch it again. For some reason, I assumed they scattered because he killed the guy, and the sun wasn't coming up right then and there. Then again, I can't remember what I did five minutes ago, so it wouldn't surprise me that I remembered this wrong too.

It wasn't a vampire head that they stuck on a pike. It was an older man's head.
They looked like they were possibly going to jump him, but when the sun started rising they all retreated.

Your basically right here.
Why turn yourself into a vampire and only kill the head?
and in fact he made it look so easy... lol
But why do that when the sun was going to come up anyway...?
