Dario Argento

One of the kings of horror if I may say so myself. Too many people call this guy just an artsy director, which doesn't do him justice at all since his movies can be quite suspenseful. So far I have seen Suspiria (Which has become one of my favorite horror movies), Phenomena, which was kinda cutesy for its subject matter, Deep Red, which was overrated but had some horrifically chill-worthy scenes, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, which I would call pretty solid. Next on my list would be the rest of his "Mothers" trilogy, "Animals" trilogy, and Tenebre.

Is anyone else familiar with the man's work? If so, what do you think?

Dario has got to be my favorite horror director tied with Rob Zombie...Argento just has so much visual style...he's the best!

My favorite film of his is obviously Suspiria, next either being Tenebre or Inferno. Do check out Tenebre- awesome film with really cool camera shots, music (by Goblin of course) & lots of gore! Inferno is one of my favorites because it's got the same style/feeling as Suspiria with the gorgeous colors. Mother of Tears is alright, but just a little odd & doesn't feel like it fits with the other two that well, but check it out anyways.

I really enjoyed "Opera" so you should definitely check it out...good murder scenes & the music rocks! What's better than people getting killed to 80's hair metal?!

Watch those that I recommend & let me know how you liked them

I haven't had much experience with Argento, honestly. I have some of his flicks, but haven't found the time to sit down and watch one completely through. I watched his Masters of Horror episode a couple days or so ago.

Did you watch Jenifer or Pelts? I like them both...some of the best ones of the whole series, next to Cigarette Burns

Definitely take the time to watch Argento's films...or at least the ones I mentioned because he is really really talented

Actually, I watched both of those. I must say, I liked Pelts better. Jenifer I was not very fond of. Cigarette Burns was a really good one. It's definitely one of my favorites so far.

I just added Mother of Tears to my Queue. Anyone seen it? I am sometimes disappointed with Argento. He can range from sick and demented to really sometimes dull and muddled.

I haven't, but I've read reviews... Apparently this is supposed to be one of his sickest/goriest, but a good bit of charm and artistic flair is gone. Most have said, as SuspiriaGirl did, that it doesn't really fit in.

By far and away, Dario Argento qualifies as one of the most masterful and important directors of our time. With titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plummage Cat o' Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Deep Red, Susperia, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, Opera, Two Evil Eyes, Trauma, The Stendhal Syndrome, Phantom of the Opera, Sleepless, The Card Player, Do You Like Hitchcock?, Mother of Tears and the upcoming Giallo, few foreign directors have had the influence that he has in the genre.

He has been compared with Hitchcock with his very visceral film style, and his use of color for foreshadowing and effect are second to none. While every story may not be tight, you can ALWAYS learn something new about how to make a movie by watching one of his films.

Keep in mind that not all of his film are horror. He is the master of the Giallo (an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the French fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism. The word giallo is Italian for "yellow", and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.). Those films do include horrific elements however.

He and Fulci may be the best to come out of Italy. Enjoy him while you can, because he is starting to get up there in age. And how can anyone hate on the man that gave us the yummy Asia Argento?

Ooh all this talk of Dario Argento and Stephen King is getting me excited.... Huge fan of both artists/creators.... But (agreed!) Stephen King is hard to beat as a master of horror... Written over 50 novels/stories (most of which have been horror and about half of which been made into movies) Not too shabby....
I most definitely loved Argento's "Suspiria" but am in need of getting further acquainted with his films *shame*
Reading Salem's Lot now actually... Never seen the movie, but I'll likely watch it after I'm finished the book. :vampire:

Advice: watch Tenebre for Argento and find the 3-hour version of Salem's Lot!

I didn't care for Suspiria. I may watch it again to give it another try. I was feeling kinda antsy that day. But you have me inspired Briggs to check out some of his other works. Creepers sounds kinda fun, any review on that?

I watched Suspiria. It's very overrated and I didn't like it. The hanging scene was awesome, though.

I watched Sleepless and it was nothing better than decent. The clarinet scene in Sleepless was fucking awesome.

I actually own Mother of Tears on DVD, but I haven't checked it out yet.
