Silly if you ask me considering the theme of the films being retribution for various "sins" and having the victims "tortured" is a legit element of that theme. IMO the themes and the ways the plot can twist are what keep me coming back (IV and V kind of put me off; being tested for being obsessed and for being a cop on the trail aren't exactly interesting themes IMO :P)
