I think though TCM had a few moments more suspenseful than most anything in Beginning, the torture and blood went towards making The Beginning a scarier, more unsettling film overall. To me, the remake was a "weaker product," neither settling fully into a tense, dirty piece or a gruesome, disturbing one.

...Also, I felt the characters helped to make it better >.>
