Yeah, it's not a bad movie, but I thought Del Toro was almost a silver bullet to this film. Granted, I'm not a big fan of his in the first place but it seemed like he just wandered from scene to scene with this vacant, glassy-eyed stare. Easily pulling it back from the abyss was Anthony Hopkins who, I am convinced is the best monster in the modern era. There's just something about the way he brings a causal menace to the screen that makes you say, "He is evil. He is a bad man... still, I must have tea with him."
Oh, and Hugo Weaving is rapidly turning into this generation's Sean Connery. Not in that he portrays iconic heroes, but in that no matter what role he's playing, he has the same accent.
And yes, the jump scares felt very cheap. It was like the director had no tricks in his horror bag and just decided, "I'll throw in a loud noise here. That's scary."
The physical effects for the wolfman were very good. The CG... well, there were spots in there where it was just jarringly bad. They should have called Pixar to get some tips on how to render fur better.
It's a nice little popcorn muncher. Yeah, it's somewhat schizophrenic trying to please everyone and Del Toro almost derails the whole thing with his devastatingly small emotional range but it's a nice little bit of spectacle for a January movie.
