And I totally agree with you about the radio stations these days. In all aspects of life, the kids today are tube fed and grow fat and lazy (metaphorically) because of it.
A lot of things weren't so great back then. I remember every Monday at noon they would test the air raid siren. The 60s were full of cold war tension, and the threat of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union was very real. There were race riots in Watts and Chicago. Once you turned 18, all males had to register for the draft. I knew a lot of guys who were drafted and shipped over to Vietnam. If a guy had long hair, it ensured harassment from the police. Disneyland would bar you from admission if you were a "hippie type''.
Even a small amount of pot was a class 1 felony and you couldn't vote until you were 21. It was much tougher for a woman to find a job, but the man made enough on his salary to support his family. If you were gay, society, in general shunned you and you might be prosecuted for , what was then, felony acts.
A lot of things were simpler, and decent paying jobs were easy to find. In general everything was cheaper and there were plenty of outdoor recreation. There was lots of wide open spaces back then, you knew your neighbors, and didn't have to lock your doors at night. College tuition was very affordable, anything with a company logo was complimentary, and hitch hiking was common and relatively safe.
Things have really changed, and not all of it for the better.
