Emily took another deep drag off of her cigarette, savoring the burn and fervently wishing for a tumbler of bourbon to go along with it. She slowly exhaled as she shifted gears to get up the steeper grade of road. The bourbon could wait. She looked at the riot of color marching up the mountain from the changing leaves. It was a good time of year for a last get together. She was looking forward to seeing everyone again.
She slowed again to take a hair pin turn, shifting to regain some speed. Her old Jeep gave a slight shudder, but continued on gamely. It would hold for a while longer.
She mused over her list of supplies, running the gambit from her trusty hunting rifle, for any stray snakes or bears, to the fifth of bourbon for a celebration at the end of the climb. Or maybe just because. She didn't think she had forgotten anything, but knew something would happen to make her think, "Damn, I wish I had..." whatever.
She reached over and flicked the volume button to turn the radio up and began to sing along to Pearl Jam, loudly. The turn off would be soon. She had seen a sign a few miles back proclaiming she was on the right course, for once in her life. The odometer had long since went out on the Jeep, so she kept her eyes open and hoped she didn't get too lost. She thought she had seen Marco's car a bit back, but wasn't sure why he would have tried to park it into a mountain.
"Men," she mused. She'd never understand them.
A dirt road magically appeared leading off into the trees. She gingerly tapped the brake and took the turn at a little faster than was safe. The Jeep fishtailed but made it onto the road. Path may be a better name for it.
Trees crowded the road. Occasionally, a branch would scrap the canvas top. Numerous rainfalls had carved deep ruts into the dirt road and made for a very bumpy ride. She was about ready to turn back when a small cabin came into view.
"Well," she thought rocking to a stop. "This is it." She tapped another cigarette and light it inhaling deeply to steel her nerves.
