Now, I understand these films never had big Hollywood budgets and were geared for European audience where, IMO, expectations are lower. All that aside, and at the risk of appearing jaded, I believe his work is vastly overrated and a bit self indulgent.
For my money, Fulci is far more entertaining and watchable, even if only for his superior makeup and FX.
Even so, I respect Argento, but a Hitchcock he is not.
Let the hating begin..........:pirate:
no hate here from me anyways i do to some extent agree with you on him being overrated his style is very unique so therefore an acquired taste but i would say because of movies like suspiria, bird with a crystal plumage, and tenebre i know there are a lot more to list just giving a few examples that is influence on horror not just giallo is so far reaching its hard to really measure...
so many future directors used many argento-isms lol in the way they directed a scene or shot, his music that his uses in his films stands apart from most that influenced many directors without naming them you can look up how many, and the atmosphere he created in his works set him apart too and again many directors have said they took a lot from argento in this regard...
but i do see your points especially the self indulgent nature he does blatantly show in some of his movies not all but i do see that
i guess just more of a fan of his than you respectfully i never had to try to like his movies.....
now the biggest part is i am in complete agreeance maybe even more so about fulci i can watch fulci day and night and not tire of it and i will say i like his better because they are sleazier and far more raw....i enjoy that more...
