When I think back on the last movie that somewhat gave me the creeps, I'd have to say it was del torro's The Orphanage, I have a thing for creepy kids. 1408's concept was good, maybe it's because I'd read it before, but neither me nor my husband found it scary at all, in fact if my memory's good, he didn't really care for it. I guess it just didn't "get to me". I thought it was more effectively entertaining than scary, then again maybe I'm a bit desensitized. I think it really depends on what kind of movies you're used to watching.
I'll also agree that it did remind me of the haunting, but at the same time, it was a little like 13 ghosts as well.
