âThe Fright Night remake is a film which taps into the audienceâs deepest rooted fears, such as those of vampires throwing motorcycles at them. I dread the thought of a vampire throwing a refrigerator or a deskjet printer or... Iâd better stop before I give myself nightmaresâ

Dedman13 Wrote:By far and away, Dario Argento qualifies as one of the most masterful and important directors of our time. With titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plummage Cat o' Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Deep Red, Susperia, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, Opera, Two Evil Eyes, Trauma, The Stendhal Syndrome, Phantom of the Opera, Sleepless, The Card Player, Do You Like Hitchcock?, Mother of Tears and the upcoming Giallo, few foreign directors have had the influence that he has in the genre.
He has been compared with Hitchcock with his very visceral film style, and his use of color for foreshadowing and effect are second to none. While every story may not be tight, you can ALWAYS learn something new about how to make a movie by watching one of his films.
Keep in mind that not all of his film are horror. He is the master of the Giallo (an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the French fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism. The word giallo is Italian for "yellow", and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.). Those films do include horrific elements however.
He and Fulci may be the best to come out of Italy. Enjoy him while you can, because he is starting to get up there in age. And how can anyone hate on the man that gave us the yummy Asia Argento?
this covers just about all i would have to say and plus i am too lazy tonight to write that much lol so

I've seen much of Argento's work, and really tried to like it. The truth is.....I don't. Susperia had it's moments, but for the most part, I find it boring. Now, I understand these films never had big Hollywood budgets and were geared for European audience where, IMO, expectations are lower. All that aside, and at the risk of appearing jaded, I believe his work is vastly overrated and a bit self indulgent.
For my money, Fulci is far more entertaining and watchable, even if only for his superior makeup and FX.
Even so, I respect Argento, but a Hitchcock he is not.
Let the hating begin..........:pirate:

no hate here from me anyways i do to some extent agree with you on him being overrated his style is very unique so therefore an acquired taste but i would say because of movies like suspiria, bird with a crystal plumage, and tenebre i know there are a lot more to list just giving a few examples that is influence on horror not just giallo is so far reaching its hard to really measure...
so many future directors used many argento-isms lol in the way they directed a scene or shot, his music that his uses in his films stands apart from most that influenced many directors without naming them you can look up how many, and the atmosphere he created in his works set him apart too and again many directors have said they took a lot from argento in this regard...
but i do see your points especially the self indulgent nature he does blatantly show in some of his movies not all but i do see that
i guess just more of a fan of his than you respectfully i never had to try to like his movies.....
now the biggest part is i am in complete agreeance maybe even more so about fulci i can watch fulci day and night and not tire of it and i will say i like his better because they are sleazier and far more raw....i enjoy that more...

I'm not discounting Argento's influence on horror, it's demonstrable. Also, I do like his Goblin soundtract, but the sound mix on many of his films is poor and very distracting.
There is no doubt Argento has had a huge impact on the genre, and [as I previously stated] I have much respect for that. It comes down to a matter of taste, and there's other directors I enjoy much more.
As far as Fulci goes, I believe you hit the nail on the head. His work is raw, sleasy, at times silly.....but it has an unmistakable charm to it. Zombi II is a classic. The splinter through the eye scene makes me cringe to this day.:khead:

you do have a good point about the sound mixes in his movies to be distracting sometimes very much so
as do i there more directors i do enjoy more than argento who sadly is losing his brillant touch with his more recent projects that too could end up hurting his legacy as well
exactly a classic example of fulci's silliness is from new york ripper with the killers duck voice which i love so much hahaha and yet it has a certain disturbing quality about it also to the sleaze factor is at its highest here
