The idea and practice of Lent is Christian. If you are only doing it for the food, it's not Lent... it's just a diet. Lent involves prayer, worship and almsgiving. If you aren't doing any of those than you are not practicing Lent, you going on a diet of no junk food.

Indeed. As a matter of fact, the idea of "giving something up" for lent actually only came into practice as a way to teach children about the ideas of fasting and acts of penance—the traditional aspects of the season—as young children shouldn't fast, and are not asked to perform penance.

Lent also involves not eating meat for 40 days from Palm Sunday to the Holy Saturday, which means it's not just about giving something up like junk food. Lent is a very sacred practice that involves many Christian traditions.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday—the day after Fat Tuesday (or Mardi Gras for you heathens  ), the last feast before the fast—and ends on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter) unless you're Eastern Orthodox, in which case, Lent ends on Palm Sunday—the Sunday directly before Easter. Palm Sunday being the day Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, palms laid at his feet by the people of the city—the traditional welcome for a king. And the ban on meat (and other animal products) has been significantly relaxed since the Middle Ages, and is now traditionally only observed on Fridays during the season unless you're a truly orthodox practitioner. *laughs* And that concludes our Catechism class for the day. Oh whatever. I used to my religions holidays like the back of my hand. I stopped giving a fuck after I picked up a book on Darwinism.
However, I raised for a brief moment of my life to not eat meat during those 40 days... but I could eat fish. Go figure.

 No lie, right? Years of Catholic school literally cements that shit to your brain. For real. And if you like Darwin, have you read Sperm Wars: The Science of Sex? Really interesting read—all about our DNA's desire to survive being the drive for everything we do. Darwinism on the cellular level. Very cool. And seriously... What's the deal with the fish? It makes NONE sense. None.

Probably more agnostic than deist, right? It's a really good way to recover from Catholic school.
Are you celebrating St. Patty's Day anyway? 'Cause you should! EVERYBODY SHOULD!!!!  Last thing I ate: Shepherd's Pie We hit the local pub at 6:30 this morning. Now we're home for a nap before my mom (Patty) throws her annual St. Patty's Party! Corned Beef!!! Yummmm!!!!!!!
