The Showtime show Dexter is easily one of my favorite shows on TV, and it seems that A LOT of other horror fans out there dig the hell out of it too. If you haven't seen it, it is based on the the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. It follows the life of a man who is by day a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police department, and by night a serial killer of people who he deems are "bad people'. When I first heard of the show, I figured "Hey, a vigilante who wants to fight crime", but the truth is much darker. Dexter is a true serial killer. He cannot stop his urges to kill. He kills "bad" people mostly to stay of the radar, and to feed his "Dark Passenger". Now my question is this. What is the genre this show fits into? Thriller or Horror? Micheal Myers could easily be considered a serial killer, and Halloween is horror. Hmmm, what a fine line these things walk.

It seems most people consider it horror. Unfortunately, I've never seen the show myself. I think I need to, though. There's been a ton of talk about this amongst the horror community.

Thiller. It has none of the expected Horror Movie things. No "Boo" moments. Gore, but of the same kind you could see on ER. It reminds me of a much cooler version of CSI. You have the cop angle and the killer angle. They just happen to be in the same package. Although Dexter does not have much of a conscience, he does have a code of ethics, which most horror movie killers do not. I won't say it is unheard of, and I honestly can't name one at the moment, but I'm sure that someone here can. Also, noone has to worry about taking a shower alone or having sex. There is no unexplained noise in the basement. Everything is based in the real world.

I got the 1st & 2nd seasons for Christmas. We are currently into our second watching of the series. Love it no matter what the genre is. You can also look for episodes online. Showtime had a few up at one time.

Showtime has it on demand. only season 3, though. I might check some of the episodes out. I've never seen the previous episodes, though.

Id put Dexter in the Thriller category, especially as the series gets later into its run. I loved season one and thought season two was excellent as well, but season three was sort of a disappointment for me, for reasons I wont mention as to not post spoilers and ruin it for people who havent seen it yet.

A little Dexter news.....
Season 3 was announced to be released on DVD and Blu Ray on August 18th.
So if you havent seen the first two seasons yet, get on the ball and by the time you are done with them you wont have a long wait to be able to pick up the latest season. If you have Showtime On Demand it wont matter either way though....lol

Dexter News:
Just found out that John Lithgow is joining the cast for the forth season as a serial killer who would be a bit of a thorn in Dex's side. Sure the guy was the star of 3rd Rock From the Sun, but he also was considered for the role of Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs:hannibleee:, so maybe he can pull something off. I just wonder if season 4 will be based at any way on one of the books. I hope so.

Lithgow's character sounds really cool to me. Sounds like he is the veteran of the serial killer circuit. I have no doubt that Lithgow will be good on Dexter. Check him out in Blow Out.

Blow Out. Oh yeah! He was the killer in Ricochet too. Good point!
