I watched this just the other day. I have to say that whilst not maintaining a consistent atmosphere, the film did succeed at frightening and overwhelming at parts. I heard a comment once saying that Dagon was supposed to be "one long chase scene," something I was skeptical of, but which intrigued me due to my love for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its great chase scenes. As it turns out, the claim was false as expected (the chase scenes are often, but well broken-up), but what chase scenes there were were above average.

Where this film truly shines though, is atmosphere. The first 30 minutes or so are among the most effective I've seen in the genre in a long time. I loved the lack of music for much of the opening, the way they shot the scenes on the boat, and especially the first shots of the couple walking through the town.

Overall, Dagon isn't quite as good as I thought it may have been from its hype, but what works works excellently. It's certainly another one to put on my "horror of the 2000s that works" list.

A solid 7/10

I'd heard about this one many a time before actually seeing it. It's been called a little-seen gem, surprising, and scary. After seeing it, I am disappointed to say that while I found it pretty surprising/mind-bending (the twist is heavily foreshadowed, but the motive behind it and the execution are rather out of the ordinary), it just was not a gem.

For starters, the acting was below par for almost everyone as I remember it, most fatally the lead (though my heart goes out to his loved ones all the same, considering he passed away recently. R.I.P.). For reasons that I won't detail as I still don't want to ruin the twist for anyone, the suspense eventually fizzles as it becomes obvious later on that there is a foregone conclusion to the film's rising action.

So, in summary, Dead and Buried is rather overrated for one that's supposed to be underrated. I expected more from a film by one of my favorite screenwriters, although as it turns out apparently Dan O'Bannon actually may not have had anything to do with the writing...

I give it a 4.5/10 for the aforementioned stagnant suspense, but a good plot, nice direction, and a score that haunted and depressed me (though it did not scare).

If you've seen Event Horizon, you've seen most of Death Ship done better, save for perhaps a few more outwardly "supernatural" moments and a few somewhat more unnerving parts due to the ship in question being a Nazi vessel instead of a spaceship that happened to be possessed by interdimensional demons. In Death Ship as in the later Event Horizon, a small group of people explore a derelict vessel which messes with their heads, and one character becomes "attached" to the ship in the worst kind of way.

The film has its moments of suspense and some direction which occasionally captures the essence of madness well, but all in all it's plagued with the sort of flaws that stick with you after a movie and make you strongly feel as though you wasted your time. The characters are kind of dull, a part of the main group is a happy family of 4, so you know they'll survive intact, and the supernatural events aboard the ship make you seriously think people would be freaking out long before they were (someone is killed by machinery pretty much the second they step on board, and hardly anybody gives a damn either about the person themself or the circumstances that brought the machinery to act in such a way).

All in all I'd give the film a 4/10. Not at all without merit, but it seems like it hardly tries at times.

With most of it, I couldn't help but agree; it's a slow burner with plenty of moments prime to creep you out. The ending was just a little underwhelming though, possibly because I didn't fully understand everything. Still, I would definitely back up those who say it's uncommonly good for the 2000s.

Does anyone think that much more so than other popular slashers, The House on Sorority Row could very easily be taken as a dark revenge movie?

Think about it; we never knew what was wrong with Eric for sure. We basically know that he was screwed up from birth and kept sheltered by his mom up until the events of the film. Eric could well have been just physically deformed and kept safe from derision by Mrs. Slater.

One day Eric was chilling in the attic when what does he see some group of sorority girls do but kill his mother in cold blood. This isn't even a Jason thing where the mother was trying to kill them either; Mrs. Slater was killed for the sake of a prank because she got on the girls' nerves (a prank that looked a lot like they just took a gun and shot her, especially from somewhere as far away as the attic was).

Of course, being deformed and probably mute it was unlikely anyone would believe Eric if he told them "his side of the story" over the story of a group of girls destined for higher-learning. In fact for all Eric knew the girls would try to kill him if he showed himself. Add this to the fact that after disposing of the body, the girls pretty much his any remorse they may have had expertly, and you have a poor sheltered guy who deduces that the only answer is to seek revenge.

From that point on, Eric attempted this revenge; not the most well-planned revenge, but far from the most straightforward slasher-tactics. Eric used his mother's corpse as part of his vengeance (maybe he planned to have it delivered to the police later? ), as well as a selection of toys from his childhood, which were effective in luring a few girls out as well as throwing in a straightforward sense of irony most "brute killers" lack into the proceedings. On top of this, Eric only killed 1 person who didn't play a part in his mother's death (2 if you count the doctor, who seemed like he intended to kill Eric to protect the protagonist): the Weird-Al looking guy who died first. To justify this, maybe Eric was still a little outraged that people were using his dead mother's home to party, or he needed to kill the guy so as not to leave witnesses early on.

Any thoughts?

My very first impression of Agnus, I thought she was going to be this strong, empowered woman; ignoring her ex-husband's obsessive phone calls.

But that goes out the window in 2 seconds. That's why I had no emotional connection for this character and it ruined the movie for me. I'm going to totally sound like a heartless woman with this, but after watching her being verbally and physically abused by her ex, using drugs, hanging around trashy people, and then letting a strange guy stay the night....I checked out and could have cared less what happened to her after that.

Judd did a great job playing the co-dependent, needy woman. I just didn't care for it.

Goss is the abusive ex-husband that never leaves her alone and has just been released from jail.... so why does he just bounce when Evans starts staying? That seemed unbelievable to me. No fight? Nothing? Come on….he’s an ex-con.

The "bug blood disease" just didn't seem believable to me. I didn't get pulled in to it. I just wanted to check this guy into the VA and get him some serious help for PTSD and psychosis. I've seen enough cases of that in my job.

I did feel itchy though.

Friedkin did an excellent job giving the feel of panic, anxiety, and claustrophobia. The whole movie was pretty much shot in this little motel room. The tinfoil scene, my God...I would have lost my mind with them.

Anyone else seen this? I've seen the movie before, and actually enjoyed it. You can pick it up for a measly $10. If you were one of those lucky people whom ordered it from Amazon, it came in a combo pack with a VHS version of the film. If you were lucky enough to snag that, I highly suggest you keep it sealed. One day, it will be worth some dough. Actually, it's already starting to become expensive. I looked on Amazon and someone was selling that version for $100.

Anyways, I liked it. It's supposed to look like a 70's/80's horror movie and I think Ti West did a great job with it. The pool scene was awesome, along with the dance scene. Also, the "Are you not the babysitter" scene was bad ass! I did not see that one coming; at all. That's all I can say without giving too much away.
