Do any of you also think that fakery and feigned ghostly activity ruins the credibilty of TV paranormal shows? I mean, for God's sake, why can't they do a GENUINE investigation for once, without having to restort to, say, camera crew throwing stones around and pretending that it is the work of a poltergeist?

I used to enjoy TV ghost shows when they first started, but now, after hearing all the pathetic chicanery that goes on behind the scenes - all the faked ghostly activity that is incessantly fed to the gullible viewers - I no longer give them any real credence. Shame, really, as a lot of these ghost crews do visit some really creepy places in their investigations.

This brings the analogy of The Boy Who Cried Wolf to mind, meaning that when any of these TV shows DO actually manage to capture a GENUINE ghost on camera or tape, then many people will think they are just faking again and so won't believe them.

I've met Grant, pimped a photo with him and commandeered his autograph (thanks to DB's urging) and have laughed myself silly that they had to "claw their way to the edge of civilization" when they went to Mackinac Island (which is about 2 hours from me in northern Michigan). Who woulda thunk that I lived on the verge of barbarism?! I mean... sure Canada and the UP are a little rough around the edges, but to be uncivilized?! I could have been bludgeoned to death by stray cocks all this time!! Thank God I'm moving south faster than Brian can say "Dude, run!"

Which means, of course, that if I ever meet him face-to-face, I will immediately ask him to marry me.
My brother and I started watching this show as a joke—ie: simply to laugh at the outrageous antics of Zak.

The Catholic Church has always believed in the idea of demonic possession -- of the fight, within the individual, between good and evil, says CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips . The ancient ritual of trying to drive evil spirits formtortured souls was dramatically portrayed by Hollywood in "The Exorcist." The Church, Phillips points out, would rather such graphic religious experiences took place privately. When one Archbishop, Emanuel Malingo, began holding increasingly popular public exorcisms, the Vatican made him stop. The exorcism scenes weren't pretty, Phillips observes. There is evidence, though, that the practice of exorcism is experiencing a revival, according to the Washington Post. Particularly, says Phillips, among the faithful in Poland, so many of whom came to Rome to mourn the death of Pope John Paul II. Demand for exorcism has apparently risen so high, 70 priests now perform the rite there, double the number of five years ago. And the Church is planning a dedicated exorcism center. Some blame the demand on the residue of the communist years. Father Jerome Hall, of the Washington Theological Union, says, "Once the oppressive regime falls, there's still a residue of pain, of betrayal, of anxiety, of evil. ... Some people who grew up in Eastern Europe would say, 'That's no wonder.' " But numbers are said to be up elsewhere, as well, reports Phillips. In Italy, 350 trained exorcists are now working. There were only 20 ten years ago. Italian exorcist Father Gabriele Nanni says, "For the sinners, who want to conquer entities or the devil himself, for them, the situation is very dangerous." Even in the United States, Phillips notes, one-in-ten Catholics, according to a recent survey, now says they've either submitted to or witnessed an exorcism. For many, it seems, the ancient battle between good and evil continues today, Phillips concludes. What's behind the apparent rise in exorcisms? Father Thomas Williams, Dean of Theology at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome and a CBS News religion consultant, told co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez on The Early Show Tuesday, "There may be two reasons. One is that there's increased interest in the occult, even in Satanism. Where I live in Italy, Satanic worship is actually on the rise. And this is true in a lot of places in Europe. And the second reason I think is because people are less careful. Honestly, they maybe pray less. They play around with things they shouldn't play with, and then they get into trouble. ... Anyone can be possessed, but I think you really have to open yourself up to it. You have to be un-careful. And I think the spiritual demons, or bad angels, do exist, and I think it's an extreme thing, but it happens sometimes. How do you know that the person is possessed, and you're not just dealing with a psychological problem? "Well," Williams responded, "that's the biggest challenge we have. Because obviously, many things that in the past that were considered demonic possession or demonic influence were really just diseases or psychological problems. So, priests work closely with psychologists to try to ascertain the real nature of the pathology or of the problem before performing an exorcism. But prayer never hurts. So if you're just praying for a person, you're not gonna do them any damage." There are specific signs that a person is possessed, Williams continued; "Three typical signs are speaking strange languages, a language a person's never had any access to whatsoever, and they just become fluent in it. And often accompanied by a change of voice that doesn't even sound like the person. Another is knowledge of secret things. For example, saying things that the person has no way of knowing. And a third is superhuman strength, the ability to lift objects and move things." What's the process of exorcism like? Is it similar to what the movie portrayed? "Well, it's similar," Williams replied. "It's mostly based on prayer and reading of sacred scripture, but there are other things used like holy water, a crucifix, etc. It's a long process. It begins with simply praying over the person and asking the person to pray with you. Often, they won't; if there really is some sort of demonic presence there, they will not do that. It's a lot of prayer until there's some sort of manifestation on the part of the demon, if there is one.

This happened to me fairly recently, maybe a month or-so ago. I was playing with the same people that are listed in this thread: http://talkhorror.com/showthread.php?t=1159 . After the occurrence, Ginger Zombie decided to join in. I'm going to leave out some of the smaller chit-chat that we had with this spirit. If there's enough response to this thread, I might even go over the tape and type out the whole session for everyone to read. Right now, I'm trying to remember the order of everything and trying to be as accurate as possible without the aid of the actual recording. Here's what happened...

So, we got out the Ouija board, set it up on a coffee table in the living room and placed a lit candle beside of it. Ginger Zombie (he's a member here and is also in The TalkHorror Show) sit on the couch because he doesn't put very much faith in them. Also, I set up a tape recorder. After the events, I listened to the recorded session, but couldn't find anything other than our surprised responses. It's unfortunate that the tape recorder didn't pick up anything, but I will never forget what happened.

When we play, we put the planchette in the center of the board and ask questions. We don't do the things that you see in the movies where they move the piece around and stop on a letter. This spirit got on the board and at first lied to us. Later, we discovered that he was the same evil spirit I mentioned in the other thread. When we would ask for his name, he would spell out the letters 'T-E-D'. Eventually I asked him if we had talked with him before to which he replied 'YES'. So, I asked him what names he had given us before. He listed about three names, if I remember correctly and one of them I had even forgotten about.

The session grew more and more intense. The piece began moving very fast, in a circle, just like in the movies. When we asked something he would stop on a certain letter. I had never played the Ouija board and had it move this fast; ever. When we would ask what he was doing, he would spell out the letters 'P-L-A-Y'. Eventually, I asked him if he could touch one of us, make a sound, etc... After I did that, he spelled out the word 'E-N-E-R-G-Y'. I asked him if he was gathering energy and he said 'YES'. Now, this is when things got surprising, to say the least.

After what seemed like a couple minutes of him circling the board, I asked him if he had enough energy to do something yet. If I remember correctly, he didn't respond immediately. After a few more circles, he started to spell something.

C-A-

I noticed the room was getting quite a bit brighter, but my focus was on the board.

N-D-

Now the room was beginning to get very bright and the candle beside of the board started hissing/popping.

L-E

After he spelled it out completely, the candle was burning very bright, the flame was extended and then it just went out. The side had somehow completely melted off of the candle and the wax poured out of it. Needless to say, everyone in the room was very surprised.

Once we moved our concentration back to the board, I asked him if he did that. He spelled out 'Did you see that with the candle haha'. After Ginger Zombie saw that, it didn't take him long before he wanted the play. The spirit, however, started getting angrier as the session grew longer. Also, he knew when someone would leave the game and when someone would blow out a candle. He would spell out 'WEAK'.

Later on, I of course asked him to do something else and when I did, he would immediately begin circling the board. We heard a ton of noises all around us, but that may or may not have been him. It may have been a little excessive, but houses do creak sometimes. However, at one point my sister began complaining that her arm was getting hot. All of us touched it and it was. I remember asking him once again to touch one of us and he said 'I Already Have'. So, he may or may not have been referring to my sister's arm, but it was pretty weird.

I should go over the recording and listen to it once again. After doing that, I would undoubtedly supply you with a more in-depth post about that night, but those were the things that stuck out. If you have any questions or comments please be sure to leave them.

Did you know that although the events in the film are fiction, the house is based on a real house!! The house is the Winchester house in San Hose, build by Sarah Winchester daughter in-law to Oliver Fisher Winchester who invented the Winchester rifle, After the death of her Daughter and husband she believed she was cursed by those killed by the rifle.

After constulting a medium she was instructed to move to San Hose and build a house to appease the spirits, as long as she kept building she would not meet an untimely death like that of her husband and daughter.

When she died in her sleep in 1922 the house had 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens. all spread over 7 storeys and covering a massive 6 acres
to confuse the spirits she had builders build stairs that went nowhere, doors that opened to brick walls and cupboards that opened into rooms, she also never slept in the same bedroom 2 nights in a row! (wish i had that many)

Poltergeist is a German word from the German verb poltern which means to make noise, rumble or knock, and the word geist which translates as spirit or ghost. In essence, when the terms are combined, you get a noisy ghost, rumbling spirit or a variety of other synonyms. Poltergeists in paranormal studies are often differentiated from other types of ghosts or haunting because of the type of activities they may perform and because they are often closely connected to one resident of a home, often an adolescent girl.

According to accounts of the activities of poltergeists, most of which encounter considerable skepticism by those who don’t believe in paranormal lore, poltergeists tend to move things around, may throw things, and may make loud or quiet noises that disturb people’s homes. Early incidences of poltergeist activity are documented as far back as the 17th century, and occasionally may have been the impetus for accusing people of witchcraft or devil worship.

There are several theories as to what a poltergeist really is. Some believe that poltergeists are not ghosts at all, but are instead telekinetic abilities manifested by a living person in turmoil. According to this explanation, this is why the focus of the incident is on a single person and frequently on adolescents. The turmoil of puberty alone could make some people manifest telekinetic incidents, or children or teens who have been abused might use telekinesis as a way of protecting or avenging themselves.

This is the predominant theory with one of the most well-known incidents called the Bell Witch Haunting. According to Southern US lore, a family in Tennessee, during the 19th century, experienced a peculiar set of noises, physical abuse and finally the death of the father, which ended the disturbances. The movie An American Haunting suggests the incidents were generated by the family’s daughter, Betsey Bell, and also suggests the cause was abuse by Betsey’s father.

Other paranormal theorists dismiss the telekinesis theory and suggest that some people who have died, and not passed on to the next phase of existence may just be mischievous or actually malicious in intent. Particularly if they died with unfinished business or in anger, it’s theorized they may be able to have some impact on the physical world, despite no longer being part of it. They might be attracted to the most vulnerable individual in a family, a child or teenager, because they could be easiest to influence.

It’s difficult to determine if the activities of poltergeists are real or imagined, and if real what the cause might be. Even if poltergeist activity was determined as a likely cause, which was true in least one case in England, the Thornton Road Poltergeist, no one can say exactly what a poltergeist is, or what causes it. The Thornton Road Poltergeist involved peculiar cases of rock throwing at a house on multiple occasions and it was investigated not only by paranormal researchers but also police who used surveillance cameras and personal observation to document the circumstances. The police could not determine the cause of the incident, which they began investigating in 1981, and they officially declared the case unsolvable a year later. There are certainly many incidences of supposed activity that have been faked, but a few cases like the events on Thornton Road, chillingly defy explanation.

Difference between Ghosts and Spirits

Here are a few examples of peoples opinions on the differences between the two.

A ghost is someone who has passed on and is "stuck" between the physical world and the Afterlife. They do not cross through The Light to go on to the Afterlife, but stick around in this "netherworld" for one reason or another.

A spirit is a person who has passed on, but has actually gone through The Light and into the Afterlife. There they go through a life review learning process, and after that, are able to come and go between the Afterlife and our physical world.

Spirits come back to watch over us, and to comfort us. Ghosts do not.

We are very often asked what, if any, difference is there between Ghosts & Spirits. Well, I suppose to a certain degree you could suggest that they are one and the same, they are both essentially made of the same thing, energy.

However, a ghost is normally depicted as something that haunts people or places and therefore gives off a feeling of fear. The dictionary defines a ghost as "The Spirit or semblance of a dead person, believed to visit or haunt living people". Not very pleasant sounding, we know, but don't you remember as a child you would have been afraid of ghosts because it was always 'ghost stories' you heard, never 'spirit stories'!

Unhappy ghosts such as these are often called Poltergeists. They feed off of our fear. This means that to get our attention they will do things to make us feel uncomfortable, or frightened, if you like. For example, banging doors, things dropping off walls etc.. It's all to get themselves noticed, and, once we acknowledge them without fear, and try to understand why they're about, things will calm down.

Spirit on the other hand, in general, are much more subtle in their approach. You may get the shivers or feel very hot as one draws near. You may feel tingles, as if someone is touching your arm, hand or shoulders for example. They can be mischievous, but never harmful. They too will try different ways of getting our attention, but not normally anything that makes us feel uneasy. Another example (and this happens to most people we know) is that things will go missing and miraculously reappear again a few days later. Usually a very good sign that spirit are around!

Spirit are usually here to guide us, whether it be the spirit of a physical person that we once knew (e.g. a late parent or grandparent) or a learned guide from ancient times (maybe an Indian or Egyptian) and so they may bring messages of comfort or advice.

Ghosts on the other hand don't have anything much to contribute (except making us jump!) until they have accepted what's going on and have perhaps been helped to happily pass into the next realm!
a ghost is something or someone that has unfinished business, or has a fear of death.

A spirit is something that was created in that existence, usually connected with nature or the six elements, water, fire, earth, air, light, darkness.

Paranormal investigators use specific tools and devices to track down evidence of paranormal activity. This guide lists both standard tools and newer, more controversial tools used in the paranormal field today.
Standard Ghost Hunting Equipment

* Notebook and Pencil: While these might seem pretty basic and obvious, they're probably the most underused and neglected tools for investigating the paranormal. However, keeping a small notebook and pen or pencil within reach usually proves to be the best way to keep track of small details that investigators might want to remember before, during and after an investigation like historic information, the client's claims of paranormal activity, details or experiences that might go unrecorded, etc.
* Flash Light: Unfortunately, most paranormal investigators don't have cameramen following them around a location, so after the power is turned out, investigators are on their own, left in complete darkness. Flash lights are good sources of emergency light and in certain locations that lack any form of natural light (like basements, underground tunnels, etc.) a flashlight could really come in handy. Since flash lights work on battery power, they've also been known to stop working during paranormal investigations. Paranormal investigators theorize that ghosts draw energy from their surroundings to manifest and batteries are a good source of energy.
* Batteries: Since battery-operated equipment might stop working during an investigation, it's best to bring plenty of extras.
* Digital Camera/35 mm Camera: Paranormal investigators like to shoot photographs with cameras when they think a spirit might be trying to manifest. There are several famous photographs of alleged ghosts that were caught on camera film. Digital cameras are used more often today because you can take a very large number of photographs in a short period of time.
* Tape Recorder: Ask any paranormal investigative group and they will tell you that a tape recorder is the most important piece of equipment. Investigators catch a type of evidence called an EVP, also known as electronic voice phenomena, by using varying types of tape recorders. EVP's are characterized by voices heard at the time of playback that were not there at the time of recording. These voices are commonly called disembodied voices.
* EMF Detector: The electromagnetic field is a fundamental force of nature. An EMF detector measures this field as well as the energy emitted by stationary charged objects. According to paranormal investigators, paranormal activity might cause disruptions in the electromagnetic field, resulting in readings on an EMF detector. Investigators might find higher EMF readings emitted in homes where paranormal activity allegedly occurs. High EMF readings in a home caused by electrical problems are often associated with fatigue, nausea, stress, chest pain, headaches and hallucinations. Therefore, investigators can use EMF detectors to rule out paranormal activity.
* Infrared Thermal Scanner: This is a temperature measuring tool that sends out a thermal beam that measures fluctuations in temperature. Paranormal investigators can monitor temperature as well as find cold and hot spots that might be caused by paranormal activity.
* Walkie-Talkies: These are good tools to have in order to keep in touch with other members of a investigative group. If group members separate into teams to investigate a location, walkie-talkies become vital in order to keep track of everyone, even more so in case of an emergency.
* Night Vision: Night Vision goggles or night vision adaptors (that attach to video recorders) will help investigators see in the dark. These are especially useful for locations that are extremely dark.
* Video Recorder: While video evidence is pretty rare, it does happen. Video evidence is the most sought after evidence of paranormal activity. After all, seeing is believing.
* Compass: Obviously, compasses are good for navigation purposes but this tool will also react if there is a disturbance in the electromagnetic field.
* Dowsing Rods: An ancient tool used to find water, dowsing rods are now used to locate sources of paranormal activity. When the rods cross, the source of energy has been found.

Newest Ghost Hunting Equipment

* K-2 Meter: Another form of an EMF detector, the K-2 Meter uses lights to indicate changes in the electromagnetic field. The K-2 Meter can be seen in action on Sci-Fi Channel's Ghost Hunters.
* Frank's Box: According to Frank Sumption, creator of Frank's Box, the device is "based on using voltage tunable radio modules from older digital car stereos, and tuning them with a random voltage derived from white noise". This device captures allegedly disembodied voices in response to questions asked by paranormal investigators. Frank's Box has been featured on A&E Network's Paranormal State.
* Dowsing Rods: An ancient tool used to find water, dowsing rods are now used to locate sources of paranormal activity. When the rods cross, the source of energy has been found.
Usually in the shape of balls, ghost lights (also called spook lights or earth lights), are patches of light that appear randomly or in patterns at particular sites. They vary in size and may be active for short periods of time or for years. Most are white or yellow, but some have been reported as red, orange or green. They may change colors while being observed. Some reports of ghost lights can be explained naturally, for example car headlights or ionized gas escaping from faults in the earth. Ghost lights have been researched by the Ghost Research Society and their findings are that:

(1) They are usually seen in remote areas
(2) They can only been seen from certain angles and distances
(3) Loud noises or bright lights may cause them to disappear
(4) Sometimes they are accompanied by a humming sound
(5) They are associated with hauntings involving accidents or tragedies involving loss of life

Some of the most famous ghost lights are the ghost lights at Marfa Texas first reported in 1883. These lights bounce up and down and move across the ground like grassfire. Witnesses here have said the lights seem to be "playful".
