Stranger Things

***this article will contain spoilers regarding the Netflix original series Stranger Things***

On July 15, 2016, Netflix, The Duffer Brothers, and Shawn Levy, made streaming history with Stranger Things, a science fiction show set in 1983.

The series is 8 episode “chapters”, and focuses on the lives and events surrounding a disappearance of a young boy (named Will Byers) in an Indiana town. It’s filled to capacity with 80s goodness such as Dungeons&Dragons, The Clash, and major 80s fashion; not to mention tons of movie references, such as E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Carrie, Firestarter, The Evil Dead, and even Pretty in Pink.

Throughout the first five 55 minute episodes, you get brief glimpses of “the monster”, finally fully seeing it in the last three, but its ominous presence is enough to keep your eyes peeled.

Winona Ryder plays the mother of the missing boy, who is convinced that he’s not been simply “kidnapped”. As the electricity malfunctions in her house, she realizes that it is her son attempting to contact her. He saves her life from the monster, and she is able to join forces with the local police chief to attempt to find his body.

As more disappearances happen, the police chief, as well as Will’s friends, begin investigating, and discover an alternate dimension they call “The Upside Down”. Along their journey (reminscent of Stand By Me), they find a gifted young girl named Eleven, who has telekinesis. It is revealed in Eleven’s flashbacks, that she was part of a government experiment that involved making contact with the monster, and opening the portal to “The Upside Down”.

The final episode of the season (as of right now, a second season has been confirmed) is action packed and even further into the E.T. references, with an epic showdown between the government vs. the monster vs. Eleven.

With pseudo-resolution, the Duffer Brothers did an excellent job of setting up the second season, hinting that Eleven may still be alive and the monster may not have fully been defeated.

The final consensus is 10 out of 10 would recommend, by the way. If you’re a fan of sci-fi and the 80s, Stranger Things is an absolute can’t miss.
