Man charged after baby found unhurt in oven - Friday The 13th - 03-21-2010

Incident linked to alcohol, drug abuse

PADUCAH — The McCracken County Sheriff's Department charged Larry C. Long with wanton endangerment for allegedly leaving his 5-week-old son in an oven for hours.

The oven was not active or warm while the baby was inside, Sheriff Jon Hayden said. Deputies arrived at the home about 7 a.m. Monday with representatives of the state Cabinet for Families and Children. An ambulance took the boy, who was not identified, to a Paducah hospital. Doctors determined he suffered no injuries, Hayden said.

Long, 33, of Reidland told investigators he smoked marijuana at a Paducah restaurant where he worked. The marijuana made him feel strange, and he suspected it might have been laced with another drug to make him hallucinate, Hayden said.

Long returned to the home he shares with the boy's mother, Brandy S. Hatton, 33.

While home, Long and Hatton drank about a fifth of whiskey. Hatton went to bed, and Long finished the bottle of whiskey.

About 5:30 a.m., Hatton was awakened by the baby's cries. She found her son in the oven, which was not completely shut.

Detectives think the baby might have been in the oven for a few hours.

Hatton's other children, ages 10 and 14, were sleeping at the time. One of the children said Long was seen in the night with the infant.

Long told detectives he must have placed the child in the oven, unaware of what he was doing.

"We took blood samples to test for drugs and alcohol from both parents," Hayden said. "Additional charges or arrests are possible."

Hayden said detectives and deputies searched the home for drugs and found none.

The Cabinet for Health and Family Services took the boy and his two siblings from Hatton's custody and placed them in emergency custody of relatives of Hatton.

Deputies arrested Long at 11:05 a.m. He was being held Monday night on a $10,000 bond.

Like 2 years back a black couple actually did kill their baby in a microwave...

If he wasn't doing something illegal in the first place then he wouldn't have to worry about it.
