Zombie/bot question - Dr. Briggs - 01-17-2011 Well there are still a good number on the board, Bo; I don't think you stopped 'em from coming on altogether. I suggest you take Terrorscribe's suggestion and implement a Captcha type thing for new members so only real people can make new accounts. Yeah, might need a bit more than just CAPTCHA since they're still trickling in. Better to have new people just through a few hoops than to have bots. The next big issues would be to go through and delete the bot accounts. There's no point in gumming up the database with 15000 bot accounts. They're pretty easy to pick them out from real accounts. I, for one, would volunteer to help clean them out. Zombie/bot question - Dr. Briggs - 01-18-2011 TerrorScribe Wrote:Yeah, might need a bit more than just CAPTCHA since they're still trickling in. We still have over 15000 members. Zombie/bot question - CarolinePar - 01-19-2011 :reddisgust:is there any REAL purpose for bots that "take over" a site anyway? Zombie/bot question - TerrorScribe - 01-19-2011 My experience with bot accounts on a forum is that they are there to spam the boards with ads. One of my friends boards got overrun with bots and there were literally THOUSANDS of spam posts. It wasn't fun cleaning that up. Also, as we've seen from a few of the bot accounts, they have links in their profiles. Get enough of these and when search engines come through, they don't see horror site, they start seeing links for porn and viagra. It's not pretty. Zombie/bot question - KaptariMind - 01-19-2011 Hopefully the spam zombie-bots are classic shamblers and not modern sprinters... It will give Bojangles's cock power more time to... uh... reach maximum potential. New to the boards, and even I noticed the major jump in members since the first time I got on and lurked two weeks ago. How the hell do they do that? Zombie/bot question - FreddysFingers - 01-21-2011 What triggered the sudden incline in bot members? |
