KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- A Kannapolis man has been arrested for arranging the rape of his wife.
Police say that the man met another man on Craigslist and hired him to do the unthinkable.
"He solicited him to enter his house and sexually assault his wife," said Chief Woody Chavis with the Kannapolis Police Department.
Chavis says he's never seen a case like this one. It started at 2:45 a.m. Sunday.
"When the victim woke up and she saw a male standing at the foot of the bed holding a knife," Chavis said.
The victim's husband was in that bed and police say the actions he took sent up a red flag.
"That was very unusual that the husband would do nothing to stop the assault on his wife," Chavis said.
Afterwards, police say he did nothing to comfort her either.
"There was none. That was one of the red flags and it was very unusual," Chavis said.
Now, police are looking for the man who carried out the alleged rape. They hope the trail from Craigslist will lead back to him.
"We have no idea who he is," Chavis said. "The investigation is ongoing. We're doing everything we can to identify him."
Police also don't know if the suspect knew he was committing a crime. Police say he may have believed he was only fulfilling a fantasy and never knew that the wife wasn't in on it.
“The suspect was convicted of indecent exposure last March in Virginia," Chavis said. "We’ve learned he is a veteran.”
Herman Fons lives near the couple’s Kannapolis home. He said neighbors had heard that the home was broken into and many had taken additional steps to secure their own property. He called the revelation of the charges “sick.”
“I wouldn’t do that to my enemy-- put ‘em into fear like that. I don’t know what people are thinking nowadays—I mean, a fantasy?” he told Newschannel 36.
The husband has been charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and attempted first-degree sexual offense.
NewsChannel 36 is not identifying the husband in an effort to protect the victim's identity.
The couple has two children who were home at the time, but were unaware of what happened.
