There has been something I've really wanted to get off my chest for a looong time concerning one of my favorite horror films of this decade: The Strangers.
I know one of the big reasons people like this is due to it's lack of "ancient-curse, revenge-scheme, so-and-so-is-the-killer" plot twists and the like, but after watching it a few times something hit me really hard:
What if Sack-Head is James's brother?
The first big clue that caught my eye was the height-chart you saw on the wall for a few seconds at the house - Showing James's height as compared to one "Stephen"'s. Why would they film such a shot unless it was to drop hints as to the killer's identity? (Unless, of course it was for the very reason of provoking red-herring theories? X) )
Second thing I thought of was the fact that you could initially suspect James himself as one of the killers, until you see Sack Head actually run towards him.
Third:
And I turned 21 in prison, doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right, but mama tried, mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleadin' I denied
That leaves no one but me to blame cause mama tried. - Sung by "The Strangers". Hints to possible family flashbacks in the sequel
Fourth: Though it kinda ruins the "It could happen to anyone" vibe, maybe they chose the summer house as Sack-Head/Stephen knew of a secluded house.
Fifth: Quite simply the look of utter, dumbfounded defeat on James's face as he sees Sack-Head remove his mask.
So, what does everyone think?

That's definitely some good points. You also brought up things that I didn't catch while watching this film. I figured The Strangers were someone that they knew, though. I remember watching this in theaters and questioning who it could be. When sack-head took his mask off, the couple looked surprised. Also, Sack-Head was the last to take his mask off, right? If I remember right, one of the girls looked at him for a moment, as he looked back. This scene seemed to me as if there was some unspoken words going on. Like a "Are you sure you're ready to reveal yourself" type of feel.

The only time I watched this movie, I had to watch the entire thing in fast forward for some reason, (some reason, you know who you are ), I am going to watch it again now. Seem like a good reason for a repeat.

Some reason had to be at home all by her self from 6:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. the next day. And, some reason was already extremely creeped out by the whole movie. Some reason can watch any supernatural horror movie all day long with no problems. But, if you start on serial killers/random murders, I, er...some reason, gets creeped out. Sorry, Loki. Next weekend you're off work, we'll watch it in normal time.:p

Okay, I have now, officially, watched the movie. It was okay. Some very creepy points. It is possible that the brother is the killer. They have a few things that point toward him. For instance, the locked front door magically unlocking. He's wearing a suit, like you'd wear for a wedding. The brother is not mentioned outside of the marks on the door frame. Against, James gives no expression when he sees the guys face. You'd think he would be surprised.
I might have misunderstood things, but that's how I saw it.

Good points. I'm going to watch this again to freshen up my memory.
