I'm still trying to piece it together myself. There is a developing field of psychology of film, in general, which can evaluate how strongly a director holds the attention of an audience by evaluating the synchronicity of brain signals within and across individuals. There is also an altogether different field which studies the priming effects of violent imagery.
There's something in between which would help explain why horror movies are so successful as a genre and also why they're fascinating to me.
