I can't stand this, especially if the person using their phone is within your line of sight. Smartphones have screen that are so fucking huge now that when someone checks their phone in a theater it looks like you are getting nailed in the eyes by the bat signal or something.
If they think it should be allowed, I should take my fucking iPad to the theater and shine it directly in their eyes after the lights are shut off. That is how I feel when someone pulls out their smartphone while a movie is playing.
