The movie is like a dramatic sci-fi game of mafia. The creatures are so perfectly imitated human beings that they are just as convincing in being... real. The film also has moments of extreme gore, of which the special effects are quite impressive for that time. Although the creature effects are visceral, the most impressive aspect of the movie is the direction, which is cold and observant, helping develop the same paranoia and mistrust that the characters face in the film. The true horror of the film is that you can't even trust those that you considered friends.

You hit the nail on the head with the direction. I did a paper on how crucial Carpenter's direction was for this film and how well it fits with it's cold, icy location.

Ooooh... brrrrr...
That cold and icy location... I really love it. The setting of the barren ice Continent of Anarctica was so appropriate to convey the confinement of these creatures. This and the tight almost claustrophobic way the camera shoots tends to send shivers right up my spine. brrr...

I've said it many times before but I know how Blair was feeling when he snapped. After getting that far into the movie I began feeling the cabin fever. The paranoia. I was stumbling over myself trying to figure out who is the thing and when did they run into it.

Rob Bottin created some of the best creature effects that still look great all these years later. This film is one the great horror movies of all time!

Loved the Original, the remake and have seen the previews for the remake to the remake and it looks pretty good.
