I saw a clip of the director explaining the cat & the kid and why the boy sounds like the cat when he opens that hideous mouth of his, in Japanese folklure, when the boy and cat were drowned by the father, they are considered innocent souls in a tragic death, and therefore their souls merged as one. The boy & cat are usually always together in the film, their souls are one in the same. Anyway, that's what I got out of the directors explaination, it made sense to me after he talked about it.
