That is an interesting question. Would I like the Halloween remake if it wasn't a Halloween remake? No not really. I think the dialogue and script would still be lame no matter what the movie was called. Plus the movie really lost me at "Love Hurts" which pretty much destroyed any atmosphere the movie had managed up until then.
Something like the Hills Have Eyes remake is hard to judge. It isn't that bad, but then again Aja basically made (almost) a shot for shot remake. So that begs the point why bother. I would still rather watch the original. Oh and don't get me started on that Psycho abomination of a remake.
Then you have somthing like the TCM remake. While it isn't a shot for shot remake the characters are so iconic that they really can't be judged separately. Plus I hated the camera work on the attacks and how much of the movie looked so washed out. I know that is the look that a lot of modern horror movies are going for, I just don't like it.
For me the one movie that wasn't a remake, but that did capture a style and even a special time period in film making is The Devil's Rejects. Sitting in the theater watching this I felt like I could have been watching an exploitation movie from the 70s.
