Now if there was something creepily ironic about the scenario, like the dad saving his kid's life at the beginning or the army supposedly dying about halfway in only to have them save the guy at the end, it would be (Or at least look) more cleverly done.
That would have been cool. I mean, maybe a rumor in the store that the military isn't of existence anymore.
However, these people were simply cut off. Even thought it wasn't said, it made it feel like there was no help out there. If there was, they certainly weren't aware of it. They had to just try. After driving around, running out all of the gas, they found nothing but death. His wife, dead. Children on the school bus, dead. Etc...
