Universal's film and TV divisions are joining forces to adapt Stephen King's epic fantasy series The Dark Tower The companies will produce three films and a TV shows based on King's seven Dark Tower novels, short stories and comic books. Ron Howard is confirmed to direct the first film, along with the first season of the TV show, which will be written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman. The books chronicle the mysterious The Gunslinger as he travels across a desolate and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape in his quest for a black tower. Portals along the way eventually allow contact with our own modern world. More inside. Interesting. I haven't read this series yet. Side note, I remember hearing that Ron Howard was on board to direct some Lovecraft-inspired thing... did I dream that? Or was it all a hype? Anyway, this could be fun.

Adding to the Viggo-love-fest. He starred in a spanish film, Alatriste, based on a series of novels by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It still hasn't been released in the US, but I got a bootleg subtitled copy, and it was awesome. (Not horror, fyi.) (/off-topic)

Deadline reported Monday that Universal has backed out completely from The Dark Tower movie trilogy and tv series. The studio stated that the production costs were too high to move along any further.

Actor Javier Bardem is said to have landed the lead role of Roland.

I just read the same thing today. It's a shame I was looking forward to this series. Maybe somebody else will pick it up.

Yeah as a huge fan of the books (which I've read more than I could tell you) I'm a little disappointed. A little. Mostly because I didn't want Ron Howard behind this project at all.

I'm kind of glad they aren't making it despite that Universal had backed them up. I think the series is far too big to be put into a TV show or movie, there's way to many things to explore and I'm sure they'll be omitting some great parts. It should exist in the minds of us fans who read the books.

The only way this can be made is on HBO, period. It could be on another cable show but wouldn't be done justice, especially for budget. If made into a franchise of films, there would be too many where each picture would be over three hours long.

If HBO went the same way like they're doing with Game of Thrones, then there would be a chance of this being successful and close to perfect.

It would probably be around seven seasons, since the last book would take up two seasons length.
