Upon receiving it for a sort of early birthday present, I have to add MANIAC to my list of selections for movies that actually scared me...
It may not be the most cohesive storyline, but Frank Zito is truly a creepy, tragic, hateable and lovable figure to observe throughout his nightly murders... The blend of chillingly realistic, sleazy insanity and horrifying cinema thrills combine to make a horror classic worthy to watch on a dark night. Though perhaps not as consistantly thrilling, Maniac's dreadful sense of uneasiness ranks it among classics like TCM '74 and The Evil Dead (My current big-boys when I think "scary")
